NAVAL CO-OPERATION WANTED

LORD LOTHIAN'S VIEWS ON SITUATION

London, March 3.

Too much attention is being paid to the German Bozy." What is wanted is Anglo-American naval co-operation. This was the view of Lord Lothian during the debate on foreign policy in the Lords on the Labour motion demanding a change of foreign polley to bring it more in accord with the realities of the existing situation.

LORD LOTHIAN CONTENDED THAT, GERMANY IS INFINITELY MORE LIABLE TO BE DESTROYED FROM THE AIR THAN BRITAIN. THERE WAS NO WORLD WAR BETWEEN 1815 AND 1914 BECAUSE BRITAIN KEPT ALOOF FROM EUROPEAN ALLIANCES AND HAD "A PARAMOUNT NAVY.

It was impossible to recapture that position alosa to-day, but the United States might be willing to extend the Monroe Doctrine sufficiently to facilitate Anglo-American naval co-operation to prevent explosions In the Far East and Europe.

Lord Cecil and Lord Chetwood 'Germany's `profession of peace- disagreed with the theory of lola-fulness meant, as Herr von Rib tion which might conceivably com-bentrop's speech at Leipzig showed, pel France to look elsewhere and that she wanted to get the things perhaps come to terms with Ger- many on the basis of dividing up peacefully. but they are anyhow the British Empire.

Attitude To War"

(The Editor, "Hong Kong Daily Press "]

Sir. It was with considerable interest that I read your lead- ing article. "An Attitude to War," which purports to be a reply to the views expressed by the Rev. J. D. Maclean In the course of a sermon delivered at the Kowloon Union Church on Sunday last.

After a careful perusal of the Rev. J. D. Maclean's sermon as reported in Monday's issue of your paper, I would submit, with all respect, that your article cannot in any way be interpreted as a satisfactory reply to the aforesaid sermon, in that you have side-tracked the main issue by merely propounding what may be described as a political outlook,

Under the circumstances, and in fairness to the Rev. J. D. Maclean. I would suggest that you meet him on his own ground, so to speak, and put forward a case, supported by Biblical pre- depts, showing » Why Christians, who honestly and sincerely be- lleve and follow the teachings of Christ, and who accept the Bible as the, book of final authority on all questions with which it deals, should adopt any method other than that set forth in the Rev. Maclean's sermon for furthering the ideal of peace on earth.

Hong Kong, March 3, 1937.

Yours, etc.

A certain lady resident of Houg Kong is convinced that he is in our midst, incognito. Her sus- plelon is so strong that she has been making enquiries all day yes- terday at local hotels and surpris lng them with the question "Is ex-King Edward VIII staying here?"

“Times" Criticises Leipzig Speech

London, Mar. 3.

The "Times," commenting on Herr von Ribbentrop's speech at Leipzig urging the return of Ger- many's old colonies, says that in- tricote and delicate international problems can never be discussed to good purpose by long-distance broadcasts and the method War particularly i-chosen when the broadcast was delivered in his own: country by an ambassador whose position is bound thereby to be weakened in the country "to which he is accredited. »

FUTURE OF THE TELEPHONE

Annual Meeting Of Company

COMPREHENSIVE

REVIEW

A satisfactory state" of affairs was revealed at the annual meet- ing of the Hong Kong Telephone Company, held in the Company's offices at the Exchange Building yesterday, when the Chairman, the Hon. 8. H. Dadwel, delivered his report to shareholders.

A bright future for the telephone service as the result of the recently inaugurated radio link between Shanghai and Canton was phasised and it was pointed out that radio telephony is comple- mentary "tó - and not competitive with radio telegraphy.
