CLEARINGS

RECORD BANK DOLLAR STEAMSHIP LINES AMERICAN MAIL LINE Sailings

Good Start For New Year

The turnover of the Bankera' Clearing House in the week to January 8 reached record. figures for recent times. Total clearings at £1,082,000,000, compared with 801,739,000 in the similar week a year ago, and thus surpasses the 1936 record of £1,041,000 reached in the week to July 1..

The first weekly return for 1837 thus indicates that turnover of the Bankers' Clearing House is con- tinuing to grow at an accelerating pace. Allowance must, however, be made for the fact that the 18- test return includes the turn of year period, which normally brings | exceptional activity to the Clear-

ing House.

The full figures for 1938, publish- ed at the close of last week, show- ed that turnover grew ́ rapidly. throughout the year. Thus, while the first quarter brought, an in- crease of only 2 per cent, on the corresponding 1935 level, the following quarters yielded respec- Live advances of 3 per cent., 9.8 per cent. and 17.2 per cent.
