During the 24 hours ended at 9.00 a.m. yesterday, the freight returns, received from the Har- bour Office, showed a fairly high tonnage movement. u good pro- portion being made up by British The total and Japanese ships. tonnage of general cargo carried by vessels to the Colony was 9,624 tons, with British steamiers carry- ing 2,490 tons

Through cargo for ports he~ yond the Colony amounted to 20.506 tons, of which 3,810 tons were carried by British steamers. Astatic deck passengers entering the Colony during the twenty-four hours ended at 0.00 a.m. yesterday werd 631. of which 328 were from British steamers.

There were altogether fifteen arrivals, of which three were of British registry. the remainder being of other nationalities, while of the 18 departures, alx were British ships. Particulars as fol- | lows:-

The tonnage of merchant vessels under construction' in Great Bri- tain and Ireland at the end of December exceeded considerably the total under construction in the. four leading countries abroad. states Lloyd's Register Shipbuilding Returns for the quarter ended De- cember 31 last.

The total for Great Britain and Ireland was 983,642 tons, an in- crease of 35,071 tons on the pre- vlong quarter and of 220,558 tons on the corresponding quarter of 1935.

The latest figures are the highest quarterly total since September, 1930. The leading countries abroad Germany, 403,465 tons; Japan, 203.146 tons; Holland, 150,- 350 tons; Sweden. 123,796 tons:- United States; 110,358 tons, and Denmark, 75,050 tons.

Of the 2,251,221 tons under con- struction in the world at the end of December, 42.8 per cent, were being buit in Great Britain and Ireland.
