Rear-Admiral Charles Edward Read Monro, B.N., retired, died recently at Newton Stewart, Wig- townshire, at the age of 74. Τη addition to valuable work as hydrographic surveyor in the Royal Navy he did excellent service for many years in the Board of Trade. During the War he not only carried out his work at the Board of Trade during the day, but slept at the Admiralty and acted as a Dury Omeer in the Hydrograpnie partment during the night.

The second son of the Rev. H. G. Monro, sometime rector of Strat- fieldsaye, Hants, and Sir Horace Monro, late of the Local Government Board, he was educated at Stubbington. entered the Navy in 1876, and joined the surveying branch in July, 1885. He took an active part as an as- sistant surveyor in surveys in the Mediterranean, the East Indies, the Pacifs, and the West Indies bo- tween the years 1885 and 1900. when he was appointed to cam- mand HMS. Dart and in charge of the survey of the Queensland coust. He was promoted to com- mander in June, 1901, and his next seagoing appointment was in com. mand of the Rambler in China, where he remained for three years engaged on surveys in British North Borneo and on the China coast. and in 1907 he took command of the Mutine on the West Coast of Africa.
