The Story Of The Church
I-The Chosen People
(BY SCRUTATOR)
The history of God's chosen people as outlined in the Old Testament, covers a minimum period of thirteen hundred years. While essentially a religious history, it is a national history as well, for it is impossible to conceive of the Jews as anything but a religious people, for the basis of their experience and the con- stant inspiration of their national consciousness is the religious conviction that they are 'chosen,' set apart' among the nations and people of the world. The hope of the Gentle world is in them, in their national expansion after the advent of their Messiah. That their Messiah should come had been the burden of prophetic message for centuries; that he should set up a kingdom was the only conceivable reason for his advent,

Now there were two different conceptions of the nature of this kingdom, current among the Jewa when Jesus was born in Bethle- Hem. There was the belief that dod's kingdom would be set up upon earth as the Jews had al- ways dreamed, and that all na tions would bow before the power of a perfected Israel. Is it any wonder that men were dazzled and blinded and cried out against him?... Is it any wonder that the priests realised that between this man and themselves there was no choice, but that he or priestcraft should perish?
