Carnival Week In Full Swing
ANNUAL RACES FOLLOW
INTERPORTS
What with the Enterport football and hockey (ladies) con- tests with Shanghai and the Chinese Interport clash between Eastern and Southern China, the Chinese New Year holidays would perhaps have been more fittingly named had they been called the Sports Carnival Week in Hong Kong. for apart from the events mentioned above, there were the "domestic" affairs, the most important of which was undoubtedly the cricket match between the Club and the United Services, a report of which ap- pears elsewhere in this issue.,
There was also the tennis encounter between the Kowloon Cricket Club and the Canton Germans, white a number of friend- Ty cricket matches were also played. In addition, the golf courses in Fanling, Deep Water. Bay, Happy Valley, Sheungshui, Kowloon City and Shatin were extensively used during the holl- days.
GERMANY'S SOYA BEAN IMPORTS
Manchukuoan Trade Hopes Frustrated
Berlin, Feb. 12.
German expectations of an an nual export of 700,000 tons of soya beans under the Manchukuoan
trude agreement were far from realised last year.
The Imports amounted to only 484.100 tons of which considerable; quantities, came from Rumania and Yugoslavia
The "Financial Times" says that the steady advance in the price of Manchukuoan beans has frustrat- ed German hopes and that Ger- many is now suffering from shortage of oil cake for fodder.- Beuter.

In order to regenerate the nation, he said, we must consolidate the national strength, and in order to alleviate the plight of the people, we must redouble our efforts at economic reconstruction.
The Kwangtung provincial pro- gramme of reconstruction includes three projects, Mayor Tseng said.
Firstly, communications will be improved, so as to facilitate traffic with the neighbouring provinces of Kwelchow, Yunnan. Klangst and Fukien
Thirdly, methods of rice cul- tivation will be improved. The pre- sent annual harvest of 50 million piculs of rice over a total area of 35,000,000 "mows" in this province is insufficient to meet the require- ments of a population of 30 million. By utilising waste lands and improving the system of irri- gation, the rise output in Kwang- tung can be increased by 20 to 30 per cent. Only thus can the prob lem of the people's livelihood be solved.--

Policeman's Fateful Discovery Proves
Undoing of Truants
London, February 12.
Prison reformers, whose reat theme is advocacy of means that will enable "those serving sentences to keep in touch with their families and the outside world so as to be able to with- stand the demoralising effects of long detention, may be lilghly gratifed at the trial unintention- ally given by the authorities in the prison on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel, but the general public of England, to judge from press discussions, are horrified at the romantic lives led by the Guernsey prisoners during the past two years.
THE AUTHORITIES HAVE JUST DISCOVERED THAT MOST OF THE PRISONERS HAD LATCH KEYS TO ENABLE THEM TO COME AND GO AS THEY PLEASED. TO SLIP OUT OF THE POST UNCENSORED LETTERS, GO TO CINEMAS, OR HAVE A NIGHT OUT AT A DANCE.
