Her parents, ardent patrons of the stage, took her to almost every production that appeared in Vienna, and the little girl was so impressed with the glamour and enchantment of the world beyond the footlights that, even at play. er thoughts were only of the great day when she, herself would appear on the stage.

Max Reinhardt was Elisabeth's tutor, after she had completed her preliminary work, and it was un- der his brilliant tutelage that she first established her reputation. in Berlin and became a star.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8. John M. Gosden, the Sussex trainer, who performed a notable

A few years ago he took to rid- ing under National Hunt rules.

He was never very prominent as a rider, but was so keen on racing that ho settled down in, a small way as a trainer. Today he has at least ten patrons and a nice string of jumpera.

So far he has not made his mark as a trainer of fat race horses, but that is because he has not had the opportunity. There is plenty of time for him to do that. His latest feat is suficient testimony to his skill

Among the older trainers Ivor and Jack Anthony, Harry and Frank Brown, Frank and Hubert Hartigan, Stanley Harrison, the Hon. George Lambton, HS. Persse and Captain Percy Whitaker were all notable amateur riders before they took to training.

The only ones to turn profession- Al were the brothers Anthony. Ivor, on being asked why he had done so, made the time-honoured remark that his digestion had at last revolted against silver cigarette

cases.

As amateur riders cannot re- ceive money for riding a winner, they usually get a present, in the case of "Anthony the gifts seemed to be mostly silver cigarette cases.
