The Lancashire cotton industry has again had a better year and the financial results of the cotton mittis show a still further improvement if 2 comparison is made with three years ago. Average mill dividends, states a Manchester correspondent, "have increased slightly, but what is more important larger. num- ber of arms have declared profits and there has been a considerable decrease in the number now work- ing at a loss.

"The average dividend for 158 spinning and manufacturing con- cerns in 1938 was 1,80 per cent, as compared with 1.72 per cent, in 1935. The total paid-up'share ca- pital of these companies is £25,- 025,599, and they distributed £359,- 465, equal to 1.04 per cent, on the paid-up capital. Last year the distribution

With regard to profits and losses, 60 milis announced profits amount- lag to £566,139 as against only 50 companies in the previous year. Mill losses showed a big decrease, In 1935 a total of 85 companies made an average loss of £5,604, but in the year just ending the number was reduced to 39 compan- les with an average of £3,800.

"During the year twenty firms reduced" their

capital from £15,881,973 to £6 529,779, The chief feature
