As a result of ten years of patient, friendly negotiations bo- tween Brighton Town Council and Cuckfield Rural Council, nearly 12 square miles of Downland around Brighton are now permanently preserved,

The preservation includes New- timber Hill. Walstonbury, and the west, Alde of Ditchling Beacon, and extends to the foot of the north side of the Downs, Poynings and | other old-world, villages below the Devil's Dyke also come into the scheme.
