TO MACAO IN A CANOE

German Sportsmen's "Voyage"

Sleeping in a small and dirty Ashing nut at Shek Shun, beng escorted by a school of porpoises and, eventually reaching, their destination, Macao, was the ex- two local sportsmen, per.ence o! Mr. H. Nother, of Mesars. Maison Mathieu, and Mr. R. Seidler, of Messrs. Reuter Brocklemann.

The voyage began when the two men set out from Cheung Chau last Saturday at 4 p.m., on a smalt cance, a portable construction of

with canvas and wood, fitted sali.

По

They sailed out of the harbour and "breezed" along to Shek Shan, South of Lantao Island, with only fog to mar an otherwise pleasant trip. The course they took followed the route of the steamers to Macao, and they were mere or less in sight of land the whole time.

It was not until 7 p.m.. that they arrived at Shck, Shan where they put up for the night in a' Ashlug hul. and, the next morn- Ing. they had a refreshing swim before carrying on with their voyage.

SCHOOL OF PORPOISES The two hardy men left Shek Shan at 11 am., and, according to Mr Seidler. the school of porpoises was the first that he had seen in this purt of the world. The fish

Nothing or an unwoward nature happened except the breaking of the mast during the rest of the voyage, which lasted six hours of steady paddling, with the arrival 2: Macao at 5 p.m., where the men

went directly to the Hotel Riviera.

Bath Mr. Nether and Mr. Se dier each have had about ten years experience canoeing in Europe and they informed a representa- tive of the "Dally Press" yesterday that the voyage was not at all hazardous They had previously made the wip to the Portuguese colony by steuner and only carried charts the surrounding terrain. When asked if they intended to go on another such trip they re- plied that they had not thought of one in the Immediate future butį that they were certain to make another some time, and added that they would probably plek a longer voyage.

During the past season we have been carrying out extensive tests with frames constructed on a still more advanced principle, which is only made possible by the "PULCRUM" process of building frames in block form. Briely, this new frame has no handle alipe at all, Every joint is parallel to the line of play, with the result that

exceptional resiliency and extra driva are obtained from the shaft. Under the normal construction the shaft is, of course, locked by the handle slips and the shock of impact is largely taken by the shoulders of the frames and, of course, the gut. In our Pli-baft" construction however, the shock is absorbed by the whole of the shaft as well, with the result that not only are the shoulders (always the weakest part of the racket) relieved of some of the strain, but additional resiliency is obtained as well. Experience is rapidly leading us to conclude that the design of a racket along these lines represents one of the greatest advances which has

ever taken place in the evolution of the tennis racket.
