MARRIAGE

Christian And Otherwise

(BY SCRUTATOR)

The history of marriage is, in a very true sense, the epitome of the social history of the human race. The story of mankind's sejourn ́on this pinnet reveals the fact that, when men and women regard each other, with true and Intelligent ́respect and homest understanding, society reaches its highest peaks of spirit tuni and cultural achievement.

The highest natural development of the sexual relationship is in the life-long monogamous union of men and women, and Christian marriage is fundamentally monogamous,. It is impos- sible to argue from this high and occasional achievement, 'how- ever, that only such relationships are natural' to 'mankind, that only such relationships are divinely, instituted.

The divine purpose is just as truly. Į doctrine as the explanation of the revealed by animals who know

The second conclusion which we have to face is this, that true marriage, sacramental love, is only possible between a man and a woman who "have the gift," whose lives are lived in "the Holy Spirit. Other relationships, other types of marriage are possible and natural and right, but being without "the gift," the spirit, are perforce fal- Hble and may have to have re- course to divorce so that the in-

Low Standard The standard of relationship im- plled in this teaching is obviously very low; there is no provision for the woman if she should decide to divorce her husband because his immodesty is displeasing to her, there is no equality of right at all "Woman, in the Mosaic law, is a chattel. Uttle better than slave, and moreover this is the low which was in operation in the society into which Jesus was born. When taxed on the question of marriage and divorce by the Pharisees, Jesus only slightly modified law by making adultery the only reason for a husband divorcing his wife, but even this very slight restric tion of a husband's privileges was

sufficient to make his own dis ciples come to the conclusion that it was better not to marry, at all To their objection Jesus gave very surprising answer, saying

In view of these conclusions, it is surely the duty of the Christian and of the Christian Church to

malatain an attitude of love and tolerance towards all those who are without "the gift," and 17 ubedience to the example of Christ, to seek to bring all men into the life of the Spirit, and in face of all failure and sin never to cease their helping ministry. I these days when the painful Jere- muads of ecclesiastics and morr- sts and what-rots are, broadcast on the winds of heaven and print- ed in every passing hour, and the world is told that it is lowering the standard of sex life and love, there is a great necessity laid upon th intelligent mind to examine these denunciations. and the rc- sult of such an examination re-

veals that they are based upon

one of two false

assumptions:

first there is the assumption that, society as such has once achieved Christian standard of marriage.

and that is historically, false; and the second assumption. that mo- dern society as such is capable of reaching the Christian standard without experiencing any change or heart is manifestly ridiculous.

Marriage may be physical or spiritual; desus recognised both relationships as marriage, but he

that this ideal which he set up. this "truth is not practicable for everyone, it is only for those who have the gift." A compassionate attempt to make the divine, pur- pose as intelligible and acceptable to small minds as he could make It! Then he proceeds. to speak of the alternative to the divine pur sought by his entire life, by his

pose of marriage, celibacy, and advises only those to practice it for whom it is possible, and then only as an alternative to marriage. and for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
