Best Returns For Six Years

MORE MERCANTILE VESSELS

Lloyd's Register shipbuilding re- turns for the last quarter of 1938 show that in United Kingdom yards. 983,842 tons of mercantile shipping were under construction at the end of the year. This figure does not include certain contracts placed in December, which bring the total to 1,000,000 tons.

The official total of 963,642 tons exceeds by 220.556 tons, or 30 per cent, the tonnage which was build- ing a year ago, and is the highest quarterly total recorded since Sep tember, 1930. It also exceeds con- siderably the aggregate tonnage now under construction in the four leading countries abroad.

A satisfactory feature of the re- turns is the amount of new work- 272,546 tons-begun during the last three months, to take the place of the 280.397 tons launched in the same period.

freight returns, received from the Harbour Office during the 24 hours ended at 9 LM. yesterday, showed very high tonnage movement, a large pro-Hal Yang. British steamer, 1431 portion being made up by British and Japanese ships

The total tonnage of general cargo carried by vessels to the Colany WIS 8.448 tona. With British ateamers carrying 1.560 tons. Through cargo for ports be- yond the Colony azmounted to 41.009 tons, of which 13,452. tons

were carried by British steamers.

Asiatic deck passengers entering the Colony during the twenty-four hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday were 1.128, of which 483 were from British steamers.

There were altogether twenty arrivals, of which eight were of British registry. the remainder being of other nationalities, wille of the 13 departures, six were British ships. Particulars as fol- lows:- Nationality

During the quarter under review 468,558 tons were begun abroad and 404,080 tons launched, show- Ing. compared with the preceding quarter, an increase. of 74,882 and 100,243 tons respectively.

Of the merchant shipbuilding in hand throughout the world at the end of December, 1,398.204, or more than 62 për cent., are being built under the inspection of Lloyd's Register.
