Dr. Barnes's Address
STUDENT CHRISTIAN
CONFERENCE
of
The Bishop of Birmingham, who, with the Lord Mayor, the Vice- Chancellor of the University, and
representative
the Free Churches, welcomed to Birming- ham recently
an international conference organised by the Student Christian Movement, said the title of the conference was the provocative sentence, "God speaks to this generation."
While they were agreed as to the fact, were they agreed as to the message? God had given to this generation knowledge that was power. In the fullness of time man had suddenly reached the understanding that had led him to a marvellous control over nature. No longer need human civilisation be painfully built upon human drudgery. The era of the machine had come. New know- ledge, amazing power-such were God's gifts to this generation, and surely in God's sight we were mis using them shamefully.
THREE BAD EXAMPLES
Take three examples. In the first place recent medical know- ledge had enabled na drastically to reduce infantile mortality and at the same time to control concep- tion, and as a result the best stocks of the foremost races of mankind were dying out. The worst reproduced themselves to discredit the future.
As a second example, our new knowledge of history and of literary criticism gave us a wholly" new insight into the sacred books of our own and of other religions, and as a result men either re- pudiated Christianity or denounced Modernism. A reasonable faith was renouriced" for the alternatives of scepticism or superstition.
Thirdly, in every well-organised State, the mpchine had set free-a considerable percentage of men women for public services. Were these used for invention and discovery, to eliminate disease, to rebuild cities, to bring in the Golden Age? Relatively few were thus employed, but armies were growing ever more powerful and the increase of arraaments was without end, Wars of jealousy, greed, suspicion, and fear would ruin us ab.

GOD'S MESSAGE
As he heard, the message. God said to this generation; "Use new knowledge to end old and useless conventions, to destroy bad tradi- tions. Eliminate the unft among you. So prder society that the children of the future come plent fully from good stocks. Seek truth. No religious revival can possibly be wholesome or ultimate- ly permanent unless it is free from superstition. Strive for peace. Take risks for peace. Trust in righteousness rather than in arms- ments. The wealth of the world is Burcient for all. There need be no fealousy it all share in it alike."

TURKISH-ITALIAN CONFERENCE
Rome, Jan. 23,
A conference between the Tur- kish Foreign Minister Rushdi Aras and Count Clano will take place la North Italy within 3 or 4 days, according to the "Giornale d'Italia." It is pointed out in political circles that the Dar- danelles question is not the only matter to discuss, but that the Turkish-Italian relations in general are to be clarified, these having been disturbed frequently, during the past ten years through for eign propaganda, The conviction is expressed that owing to the cooling off of Turkish-French, re- lations as well as with the League of Nations through the Al- exandrette question, a basis for co- operation will not be difficult, to find. An agreement of the pat- tern as with England regarding the Mediteranean is mentioned, except that in such a case, Italy would pledge herself to accept the | status quo in the entire Mediter-
ranean. In this case she would. doubtlessly become a signatory to, the Dardanelles agreement, only that the question of Soviet influ ence in the Mediterranean would remain to be settled Transotrun. Neas Bermen
