Silver prices dropped 1/18 yes- terday for both deliveries, the quotations being 20 7/16 for Ready and 20 5/16 for Forward. 6dver advices indicated some Indian and 118.60 general selling. The market was steady but quiet. After the official fixing a small business was done at the fixed rate. American Bilver was quoted at 442 for Spot.

KWANGTUNG RICE SHORTAGE

Canton, Jan, 22.- In view of the acute rice shortage in Kwangtung, the local authorities are willing to pay 50 per cent. of the duty on imported rice on behalf of the importers: The Ministry of Finance has handed down a ruling that in shipments of rice less than 300,000 piculs one half of the duty may be deferred.

Canton has for years depended on Stam and Indo-China rice im ported by Hong Kong merchants. Native rice is stated to be on their way here from the North, by rafi and steamers, but rice prices stili remain high. Poor people plun dered rice shops in the interior.

The local crops were bad last year owing to the early drought Union News.
