Cold Weather And The Car

Lord Nuffield gave some interest- ing views upon road safety at Cowley recently. Misconception of the problems of accident preven- don, he said, arose if the attempt were made to put users in distinét categories. Every driver of a motor vehicle was also a pedestrian and often a cyclist, Every cyclist and pedestrian relied upon road trans- port for his existence. There was, therefore, no place in modern life for the red flag mind. It was un- reasonable. Yet It was largely responsible for the propaganda which discriminated between road users, classifed them, and sought to set them one against the other. Criticising road accident statis- ties, Lord Nuffield said that they had been worded in such a way that the blame was automatically laid at the motorist's door.. When those statistics were analysed a 'different - story became apparent. and the essence of it was that road |design was basically responsible.

"At heart," he added, "the aver- age Briton detests anything which overlooks fair play. It is in his blood and breeding to do so. And évery Briton, if he were shown the facts in their true perspective, would immediately arrive at the very definite conclusion, that it is entirely against all British feeling that because a man drives a motor vehicle he should become im- mediately suspect.

**I feel that this is the secret of the whole problem-too much stress has been laid on accidents" and too little on their causes. This is why Injustice has crept into our legislation, why an endless variety of regulations against motoring has been accepted. If full "pub- llelty were given for the real causes of accidents, fair play for the motorist would become au- tomatic, there would be less bad teeling between road users, and selfishness and bitterness would give place to courtesy on the road."

COLD WEATHER PRECAUTIONS

So far the temperature has, not tallen sufficiently low this winter. to cause much trouble to motorists; but it is time that precautions were taken against the damage that frost can do. If the water in the cooling system freezes, the résult may be a cracked cylinder block or a damaged water impeller or both.

The heater, if it is sucd- ciently powerful, will keep the whole engine wärm and ensure not only protection against frost but also an easy start in the morning. It can be a parafan heater, on the miner's lamp principle, or it can be an electric heater. In both cases the heating element is usual ly hung somewhere under the bonnet.
