On his arrival in Nanking, Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang, who was responsible for the detention of the Generalissimo for twelve days at Stanfa, regretted his action and expressed readiness to take punishment. In a letter to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the Young Marskał wrote:
"I am naturally rustic, surly and unpolished and therefore committed an impudent, criminal act. Now I have penitently fol- lowed you le Nanking in order to await the punishment befitting my crime.
"I will accept even death if it is beneficial to my country, Do not allow sentiment or friendship to deter you from dealbar with me as I deserve."
