Professor Edmund. Whittaker has been for twenty-four years professor of Mathematics in Edin- burgh Univerversity. He President of the Mathematical As- sociation and of the London Mathematical Society, and has been an F.R.8. since 1905. His earlier distinctions were won in astronomy. and be was Royal 'Astronomer 'of Ireland' from 1906- 1812. He was received into the; Catholic Church in 1930.

Rev. Donald Knox, one of the best known priests in England, has been made a Domestic Prelate to the Pope, and will henceforth be known as Morisignor Knox. He has been called the "clerical Chas- terton," and he is equally well known as a brikant satirist and as a writer of detective stories. He is a brother of the Editor of "Punch" and a son of a former Church of England Bishop of Manchester. When he was in Oxford he was President of the Oxford Union, and he is now re- sident chaplain in his old univer- Bity. He became a Catholic in the late twenties. He la one of the wittest writers in England. and hla "Barchester Pilgrimage.” a continuation of the Barchester povels of Anthony Trollope · is worthy of a place in the original series.
