Owing to the rise in the price of rubber, the rubber plantations of the Malay States are beginning to resume their former prosperity. There is now a bigger demand for colle labour, but since the number of emigrants has been zestricted by the Singapore au- thorities to 1,500 a year, :paisen- ger brokers are taking advantage of this opportunity to "squiseze": the labourer who wish to pro- ceed to Singapore to find work on the plantations, and, accordingly, the pisange rate of 450 has clačni
