CHIANG'S MESSAGE
Nanking Dec. 18. "Well and safe. Don't worry." This Is the gist of a telegram sent from Siantu by Marshal Chiang Kai-shek to Loyang in a desperate effort to effect her husband's re- irase from the hands of rebel leaders Sunday, even at grave
personal risk
This is the Marshal's first com- munication with the outside world from the trouble-torn city of Sieniu Slace General Chang Hsueh-lang seized his person In what now appears to have been an abortive I "coup."
Marshal Chang's telegram does 238 not mention the situation with respect to the insurrection.
It is officially learned that Mr. W, H. Donald, former Hong Kong newspaperAN. one-time adviser to General Chang Hsueh-llang. and now the adviser of Marshal Chiang, has arrived at Blanfu. He is believed to be attempting to treat for the Marshal's release, though recent reports lead to the belief that Ch'ang Kai-shek has already managed to escape his captors.
General Li Chung-Jen and Gene- ral Liu Hsiang. Pacification Com misioners of Kwangsi and Sze- chuan respectively, of whose loy- alty there was a shadow of doubt In some quarters, have telegraphed their allegiance to the Government, which has
much gratification, here......... Renter

LAST REMAINING TOWER
So white was the glare of the flames and so fierce the light that this picture of the South Tower of the Crystal Palace was "snapped" "at night as an ordinary, daylight photograph is snapped. A few minutes after it had been taken flames began to lick the base of the tower, and a splid line of police forced the crowd back a quarter of a mile (above) for their own safety lest the tower should crash..
Diverting Aspects
(Continued from Page 1)
However, my first ascent to The Peak in Hong Kong's Peak tram, was one of inborn excitement. To see houses passing alongside the tracks, at drunken angies, to see charming little terraced gardens layed out in cunning, adaptation to the angle. of the hillside, was in itself pleasant enough.
I looked up the track only to feel that it went STRAIGHT UP, and for the fact that I, along with several casual and amazingly unconcerned passengers, was about to be elevated by the strength of a paltry steel cable to "unrealized altitudes, was suficient to raise the hair on my neck. (I got a hair-cut after returning from The Peak to Hong Kong). I have a feeling that there is a tram which makes an ascent up a mountain on St. Helena, or in the Azores, or Canary Isles, but I am uncertain,
It appears to me that a story plot based upon suburban bandits pursuing a young lady in distress up and down a funicular tram, would be quite readable. The lady could step from the down-going tram car to the up-going one, when the bandits were distracted by the eerie steeps ofthe thing.
If one finds it possible to twist the neck to a full right angle, a spectacle of the most enchanting nature is revealed.·· The bay between Hong Kong and. Kowloon, with its miniature- appearing toy ships, surrounded with junk-flotillas, and the slim, grey battleships 1ying there Hke models upon a mirror surface.. is well worth seeing. I should say that the Port of Rio de Janiero, in South America is 'but sternly to the test in the con- test for the most lovely of city prospects.
..
Certain other aspects of Hong Kong charm me constantly. I shall write of them in forthcoming appearances of this re- action column.

This development follows closely upon recent misfortunes and dis- appointments experienced by the would-be travellers, for the Hon. Mr. Baird following an alleged "split" with his two companious, had decided to make the sea voyage alone.

Both Grant and Smith departed by the RM8. Empress of Japan en route to California, when the former was stated to have been. recalled by his studio. According to Baird on the other hand, he did not know of his erstwhile panions' intentions until sometime after the Empress of Japan had valled. In the meanwhile, not in the least bit deterred by the wholesale "desertion," Bazd con- tinued to purchase, stores, etc., fuly determined to make the trip alone.
