Art Of Bogey Play

SECRET OF LONG DRIVING

With the drawing to a close of a season's play it is custom- ary for golfers to take stuck of themselves, and to usk, “Have 1 made any progress" writes AL W, in a leading Home journal. If The state of his handicap is regarded as a true indication. It has come down he is very well satisfied; if it remains station- ary he is reasonably content; but if it has gone up he is wholly displeased because of a loss of dignity.

From a mass of accumulated corespondence

"Why is it that when playing a match I win nine out of ten, but, try as hard as I can, I cannot win a medal. I play eight-and-nine nore handicap men level, and often than not take their money. but on competition days they beat me easily. I FLAR desperately anxious to get down to single Agures, but I see no hope unless I can win something tangible." CARD-AND-PENCIL GAME

་་

I should have thought that the winning of opponents' half-crowns. the amount of the or whatever stake 15, was b tangible expression of one's playing ability, but, of course, the people who decide handicaps do not jake cognisance of such matters. What members play for, and what are the results of these transactions, are ho con- cern of anybody's. In the case of this particular correspondent it would appear that the card-and- pencil game defeats him.

As this is the season for bogey competitions I would "suggest a re- | vision of tacts. It is a good plan to analyse the card and make a mental review of the holes at which he has a stroke. Playing from ten handicap there are eight- holes at which he has a stroke allowance. and. by judicious play, he should win six of them, while a half should be obtained at each or the other two.

In theory, he is six up with ten holes to play, and he should pro- ceed on the basis of halving at least five of them: indeed. he might win one, or perhaps, two. by good approach work and put- ting. At any rate, he should finish the round one up on bogey, which indicates that he has played better than his handicap, a fact not likely to escape the notice of the committee. The player should`ai- ways bear in mind that in playing a 5 bogey hole, where he has s stroke allowance, it is madness to try to get up in two shots.

Play carefully to within reason- able striking distance of the green, pitch on with the third shot, and with two putts the hole is won. Bus it is a totally different matter when attacking a fairly long hole where the player has no strike in hand, He must take a risk by trying to get up in two shots in order to register a 4; and a win. Failure does not necessarily mean disaster, for there is always a res- sonable chance of a 5, and a half,

By playing strictly to a plan it is not difficult to keep pace with to be taken, bogey, Risks have

on the course, he is perfectly eatis- fed.

However, this is of no interest to my correspondent, who wants to hit the ball out of sight, and I suspect that in so doing wishes those with suitably to impress whom, he is in the habit of play- ing. It is really a form of vanity. Now for Thomson's "secret" of long driving. "He is a finely-built young man with broad shoulders, and back muscles. powerful

strong hands. There 15 big no nonsense about Thomson's methods; he puts every ounce of power into the shot, and crashes the clubhead through the ball at an enormous speed-faster than" any other golfer.

In the "National Golf Review" of America Thomson describes his methods. He says: "From the start of the down swing I pick up the clubhead speed quicker than other players. Most of them walt longer for the final throw or punch. I start my hands in action. almost from the commencemen: 'of the downward motion. At the same time, I get the left hip well out of the way, and this quick turn of the hip adds to the speed of the clubbed, which is what I am after."

CLUBHEAD SPEED

Լ

As Thomson points out, there is only a given space in which to get the clubhead moving. Most of the good golfers wait until the hands are about half-way down, before attempting to increase the speed of the chibhead, and they delay getting the left hip aut of the

"Any. way just a little longer. extra distance I get (Thomson adds) comes from the faster start with the hands, and the faster left-hip movement on the down- swing. Once the left hip is gut of the way, hands, arms, shoulders. and back all work together to keep the speed increasing on and through the ball."

In offering advice to the average main golfer. Thomson says the trouble is that his hands and body do not work together. He doesn't turn enough on the back-swing, and fails to get far enough round to have any swinging force. As a result, the body ties up the hands, and Instead of gaining speed in the last arc of the swing speed is "actually lost. If the turn 15 mited the body is around too quickly. especially the right side. whence most of the trouble springs.

4

While the left-hand and arm are the main factors in keeping control the stronger righthand "does more work when it comes to the matter of speed through the down-swing.. While the right- hand should not be allowed to overpower the left; it should not be checked or held back. It is no infrequent thing for Thomson to reach a hole of 500 yards with a drive and a No. 5 Iron, while others are using a driver and a brassie, and then being short.
