Version appeared in 1811 there were about eighty manuscripts in existence but now, in 1936, there are about two thousand, Among these are the Codexes which are, the four aldest in existence and were per- haps a century older than the oldest from which the Authorised Version was translated.

For years no outsiders were permitted to gaze upon this manuscript until Tischendorf was allowed to set his eyes upon it. He spent six hours over the leaves. but whenever his interest stayed too long on any of snatched the manuscript it was away from him.
