Poverty In South Wales

London, Nov. 19. An outspoken apan letter widely distributed in the streets of Cwmbran, Pontypool and eise- where, and handed to the King's Equerry when the King started on his second day tour at South Wales. after sleeping in the train in a railway siding.

The letter was widely signed from "Eastern Valley Marchers" and declared:-

"Our valley la blighted by the dead hand of poverty and we re- gret that your tour is planned in such a way that the terrible ef- fects of this poverty won't be seen. In these towns and villages,, live, men continuously unemployed for ten or twelve years, young men who are denied the chance of ever- getting a day's work, women who are prematurely old in bodies. children stunted and frall. family life shattered by the cruel Means Test. We respectfully ask Your Majesty, how can suffering people belleve the" talk of prosperity and joyfully celebrate the coronation. We earnestly appeal to you to in- dicate to your ministers that the

Means Test is to go so that the unemployed can enjoy a higher standard of living which" Work

ST. PATRICK'S SOCIETY

Suggestions Made For Annual Ball

14

NEW PRESIDENT

At the general, annuni meeting of the St. Patrick's Society of Hong Kong. hed yesterday even- ing at the Jacobean Room of the Hong Kong Hotel, it was decided to hold a ball on St Patrick's

Day, or as close to that date as possible so as not to conflict with the annual party given by the Royal Ulster Rifles, which is being held on March 17.

Suggestions were made that, if carried out by the incoming com- mittee, the ball will hold promise. of a real "Mick's" - party, with "colleens" in Irish costume, music and dances of "suld Dizeland," and the kissing of "the" Blarney Stone.

Vice- Mr. C. G. Perdue, the President of the. Society, took the

chair in the absence of the Pre-

sident, Mr. P. P. B. James, who is on leave.

DECREASE OF MEMBERSHIP

After the minutes of the 6th by the Hon. Secretary, Mr. B. H. annual general meeting were read

C. Hallowes, the Chairman ré- marked on the decrease of mem- bership, mainly through depar- tures from the Colony. He re- gretted the absence of Mr. M. J. Breen and Dr. W. `B. A. Moore.

A ball was not held last year on account of the death of · King George V, and this brought sub- scriptions down considerably as members usually sent in their subscriptions at the same time
