DYSENTERY SCOURGE
Another Case Admitted
Investigations Proceeding
PROGRESS REPORT PROMISED
What The Public Thinks
Another dysentery case, that of a Chinese medical student from the University, was admitted yesterday to the Government Civil Hospital, stated Dr. G. W Eope, Medical Officer of Health.
Thus the scourge continues." "However, no further deaths have been reported, though several of the patients in the various hos- pitals are reported to be in a critical state still...
It was officially stated yesterday that investigations of a par- ticularly thorough nature are being effected by the health officers of the Medical Department.
It was further ascertained that a preliminary report, dealing explicitly with the present outbreak, will be issited to the Press before the end of this week.
Meadwhile, the advice previously given by Dr. A. R. Welling- ton, Director of Medical and Sanitary Services, that every precau- tion should be taken in the selection of foodstuffs, and, as far as possible, everything should be boiled...
Commission Of Inquiry. Suggested
[The Editor,Hong Kong Daily Press."]
Dear Sir,-Permit me to congratulate you on the frank man- ner in which you have brought to the notice of the public the facts of this dysentery trouble, and also for the fearless manner in which you have enlightened a great number of people con- cerning the attitude of certain officials. If anything. I would say that your language was far too restrained under the very trying clrcumstances.
I suggest that an agitation-a very rare thing in this Colony -be started with the object of having a Commission, representa- tive of the medical profession and the Chinese and European population, appointed to investigate this whole matter because I feel that otherwise the charges, which might be sheeted-home to some persons: or organisations, will merely, he relegated to dusty files in cob-webbed pigeon-holes.
The fact is, the faith of the public has been shaken in con- nection with the precautions which it was thought were being taken regarding the purity of food supplies, and until that faith can be re-established there will always remain a' most unsatis- factory queasiness on the part of residents,
Anyway, whatever is done, someone with the necessary power should see to it that Government officials have their positions and functions clearly defined for them on, the basis that they are Servants and not Star Chamber pictators. These people are paid to do a job, and if they adopt the "you-be-hanged" attitude that at least one of them has adopted, then the sooner a pur- ging takes place the better for the efficiency of the entire Ad- ministration.
Now that the "Dally Press" has brought the facts of this matter to light it is possible that something will be done. That is alright. In its way, but what is the use of locking the door after' the horse has bolted?
Yours faithfully.
"GET ON OR GET OUT.”
"What Security For The Future?”
[The Editor, "Hong Kong Daily Press."]
Dear Sir.-In connection with the article in to-day's "Dafly Press "as one of the parents concerned-it seems strange to me... that after Dr. Gray had been reported in the Press as having completed his investigations, and`5 days, after my daughter had been admitted to the War Memorial Nursing Home, a Sanitary Inspector called at my house and in the absence of my wife and myself interrogated the nurse..
A suitable questionnaire could have been sent to me personally within 24 hours.
What concerns most of us, apart from the present anxiety, is - what security have wo for the future? Taking into considera- tion the filthy sea water, fliby streets and the general apathy / and smugness of our local "bigwigs," we have no guarantee that this will not happen again in the near future.
Yours faithfully,
" ANXIOUS."
"Who Is To Blame?"
[The Editor, Hong Kong Daily Prem"] Dear Bit--One of your headings read, “Who Is To Blame?" That is what we all want to know. - If nobody is to blame then we know where we are, but that is hard to believe at this en- lightened period of the scientific day.
If the officials cannot solve this problem, then, before more outbreaks occur, let those who are sufficiently expert step in and take the necessary setion, m
But perhaps the "regulations” will not permit of such action.
Yours, etc.,
“INQUIRER.
"If Lady Astor Were Here!
The Editor, Hong Kong Daily. Presa."]
Dear Sir, I presume you are a man, but if you had been a woman, and a mother, you could not have better expressed the feelings which many of us have at the present time. The an- xiety and worry which this outbreak-you call it a "scourge,”/ and well zald!—of dysentery has caused is deep and far-reaching. But with that anxiety there is mixed an amazement at the at- titude of responsible oficials which I, even though a woman, can- not find words to express. If the officials have not taken, the proper precautions to safeguard the purity of the food and milk why is the thing not brought to light? If they have done all that they should have done, then why not let the public know the true facts of the case and who is to blame? A
It seems to me that Officialdom here thinks we are all too lazy or stupid to offer any criticism. Well, if a woman with the

.
SPECTATORS THRILLED
GOVERNOR AND WIFE ATTEND
One of the best displays yet to be seen in the Colony was provided by the Hong Kong Fire Brigade yesterday afternoon when they presented their annual drill display in the compound of the new No. 2 Police Station, Wanchal, In the presence of a large, gathering of spectators which included His Excellency the Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott, "and Lady Caldecott, Recom panied by Capt. Department.
The Colony's freighters demon- strated their ability, alertness and prompt application of the various types of apparatus used in com- batting conflagrations. Each item on the programme received well merited applause and spectators were more than thrilled when a Areman was sent up the 100 toot ali-steel motor turntable fire es- cape..
A novel feature introduced in the display was a broadcast run- ning commentary given by Mr. J. C. Fitz Henry, Deputy Superinten- dent of the Fire Brigade, who des- -cribed every event in most comprehensive manner thereby

What Precautionary Measures?
[The Editor, "Hong Kong Daily Press."] Sir-I am not so much interested to know what is being done now to find out the cause of the dysentery scourge as to know what was done beforehand in the way of precautionary measures.
I think the Administration of the Colony owes a responsi bility to the public in this connection.

ACTION."
[The Editor, Hong Kong Dally Press."} "Dear Sir, When I read. your comments on this dysentery epidemic in Tuesday's "Dally Press" (and I presume you either wrote them or sanctioned them) I thought you were too severe. When I read your further disclosures in today's (Wednesday's) paper I thought you, were not severe enough We have surely zeached the limit. This dysentery scourge has caused death and terrible pain to many people (the anxiety it has caused in incalculable), and yet no oficial statement has been issued.
If we take this sort of, thing without registering a protest in the highest quarters, then we deserve all we yet,...,
Your attitude is deserving of every commendation.
Yours sincerely,
