"HUMBUG ABOUT VITAMINS"
Doctor Urges Good Plain Food
WOMEN AND
BIRTH-RATE
"There is more humbug talked about food to-day than ever before In the history of man," said Dr. H. Rose (Buckinghamshire), re- ferring to vitamins, in a specch recently at the National Associa- tion of Insurance Committees' Conference at Bournemouth.
"What is wanted is a good, plain." wholesome mixed diet," he con- tinued,
"Do you now see the stockpots, with meat and vegetables and a good old suet dumpling' to go all round? It is appalling that you should get people, being led aside by vitamins here and vitamins there My godfathers! If they would only take perfectly plain wholesome food with good veget- ables.""
Dr. H. Rose said that while sanitation and housing conditions had improved, the maternal mor- tality rate had risen.
RATE LOWER AMONG POOR
"Why is that?" he asked. “It is a fact that the maternal mortality rate la higher among the well-to- do than it is among the poor. Modern woman in this respect is comparing unfavourably with her ancestor. The Individual who works the hardest; who, I might say, la up against it, is the one who will do the best.
"The general rush of to-day- the wireless. the cinemas, and the hikings and the holidays-is not an ideal preparation for the in- dividual."
The expectant mother needed sunshine and open-air exercise, When one went into homes one saw a tin-opener от the table nowadays,
INCREASED DRUG COSTS Mr. Stephen H. Payne, Ins Presential address, spoke of "the very disquieting increase in the cost of drugs and appliances. The Ministry have recently reduced the percentage of advances to chemists in respect of dispensing fees, and this points to the ürgent necessity for considering whether the supervision of insurance pre- scribing should not be strength- ened, and whether more responsi- bility for supervision should not fall upon local committees, who realised the Importance of keep- ing the Chemists' Fund solvent.
The reinstatement into medical benefit of an enormous number, of people who, through unemploy- ment, had lost their title to it, was, he said, one of the most satisfac- tory features of the year.
When the conference instructed the executive Council to urge the Ministry to place funds at the dis- posal of the Committees to enable them to take a larger part in education, Mr. Fairbairn (Worces- ter declared: "Instead of using honeyed words, you should go to the Treasury and ask for some of the £20,000,000 Mr. Churchill took away from us. You have to punch hard in the right place."
