Tilden And Vines To Play

LECTURE THIS EVENING

Tennis enthusiasts in the Colony are in for a real treat to-day and to-morrow when the world famous professional pair W. T... Tilden and H. Ellsworth Vines, both former Wimbledon champions, will take part in exhibition matches on the Stand Court of the Hong Kong Cricket Club, commencing at 3.30 P... (or 4 p.m.) to-day, and 3.30 pm. to-morrow.

There is no booking for co- day's match, the prices for ad- mission being $1 to all seats and. 50 centa for standing room "to Servicemen in uniform only..

Bookings for to-morrow's five-get match, which will commence at 3.36 pm. has been most success- ful and there are now only a very few reserved seats left.

HOTEL LECTURE Following to-day's match, Tilden will give a lecture at the Hong Kong Hotel Root Garden, cam- mencing at 6.30 pm. for which a charge of $1.50 will be made. Tickets may be booked at Moutrie's.

Tilden and Vines will leave for Manila to-morrow evening. fol- lowing their five-set match, but are returning to the Colony on Monday, November 16. when they will be the guests of His Excel- lency the Governor and Lady Cal- decott at a luncheon at Govern- ment House. They will play their second five-set exhibition match at 3.30 p.m. the same afternoon.

SUBSCRIPTION DINNER

This will be followed by a pub- lle subscription dinner-dance at the Hong Kong Hotel Root Gar- dea, for which a charge of $10 per head is being made.

On Tuesday. November 17, they will play their last five-set ex- hibition match, commencing at 3.30 p.m., before leaving for Shang- had by the President, Harrison. Prior to the match, they will be entertained to un by the Hong Kong Rotary Club.

William Tatein Tilden, born Germantown, Philadelphia, Feb. 10, 1893. Educated, Pennsylvania University. Became a professional in Dec. 1930. Won U.S.A. singles championship seven times (1920- 25, 1929). Represented U.S.A. in Davis Cup for 11 consecutive years, 1920-30, winning 17 matches and losing 5, two to Rene Lacoste and three to Henri Cochét (who de feated Tilden at Wimbledon ́in 1929); won singles championship at Wimbledon 1920-21, 1930 and the Wimbled doubles with F. T. Hunt- er. 1927; won the doubles cham- pionship US.A. with Vincent Bi- chards 1918, 1921-22, with B.I.C. Norton in 1923 and with F. T. Bünter, 1927; won professional singles championship of U.S.A. and runners-up with Hunter in doubles, 1931 was beaten by K. Kozeluh in the semi-final of the USA.' pro- fessional singles title, 1932; second in world's professional champion- ship in Berlin, 1933; third in pro fessional championship (beaten by: Vines and Musslein) Wembley. 1934.

ELLSWORTH VINES

H Ellsworth Vines, born Los Angeles, California. Sept. 28, 1911, educated at Čalifornia University, Rose very rapidly won U.S.A. singles championship, 1931, 1932; doubles U.6.A. championship (with Keith Gledhill) 1932, mixed doubles (with Miss Ryan) 1933; won single, championship Wimbledon. 1932; Analist Wimbledon (beaten by Jack Crawford) 1932; represented America in Davis Cup 1932-33; toured Australia with American team and won singles champion- ship of New South Wales. 1932. Ranked No. 1 in USA, 1932-33; won protession championship at Wembley, 1934.
