"ROAD TO GLORY"

A dramatic star shell is promised In "The Road to Glory" 20th Cen- tury Fox production which opens to-day at the Queen's and Alham- bra Theatres. Featuring the year's most impressive cast, the alm is. hailed as the strangest, strongest drama of love ever brought to the screen.

Fredric March, Warner Baxter and Lionel Barrymore, are starred, with the supporting cast headed by June Lang and Gregory Ratom.

Fired with the inspired acting of such performers, the film tells a gripping story of love in all its phases, painted on a canvas as the war itselt.

Baxter is seen as the war-weary" commander of a valorous regiment. Monique, a lovely French nurse, provides him with his only interest in life.

Fredric March. Baxter's chief ald, unwittingly falls in love with Moni que too, unaware that Baxter cares deeply for the girl.

“ANYTHING GOES

Yesterday saw the local opening of "Anything Goes," at the Majes- uc Theatre. This is the Para-

mount presentation of the musical comedy which was such a pro- nounced success on Broadway. It apounds in tuneful songs. comic scenes, and set of parodies on the "You're the Top" hit which are riotously funny.

Bing Crosby heads the cast of favourities in a role that affords him an unrivalled opportunity to dis- play his versatile talents to song and comedy. He sings and clowns to one's heart's content. Assisting L the general merriment are Ethel Merman, known everywhere as

A whirlwind chase at the dock winds up in a fervid romantic con- fession while a dazed mob hears Bing's whispered words of affec- tton boom through the air through the agency of a loud speaker:

"THE WHITE ANGEL"

The lives of great men and women are more and more becom- ing á subject of motion picture pro duetion in Hollywood. Certainly, it is true, that entertainment and biography can go hand in hand. Such a film as Warner Bros." "The Story of Louis Pasteur," for exam- ple, has shown that the movie, portrayal of a famous character can indeed be as educational as it is thrilling.

£600,000 Scheme For

A Cinema

The Alhambra, Leicester-square, one of London's most famous thea- tres, is to be pulled down to make Toom for a cinems.

The site-measuring 25,000 square feet, including the Turkish

pur- baths adjoining-has been chased by Mr. Oscar Deutsch, head of the Odeon circuit, and a new Odeon, to seat 2,000 people, will be

erected.

The cost of the scheme, includ- ing the land, is expected to be about £600,000.

Mr. Andrew Mather and Mr. Harry Weedon will be the archit- ects, and Bir Robert McAlpine and. Sons the contractors. The deal. one of the most important of its kind that the West End, bas known, was negotiated with Sir Oswald Stoll, head of Alhambra Theatres Ltd., by Mr. Claud God- dard, of Goddard and Smith, King- street, St. James's.

TERRACE Of suors

The new cinema will have its main entrance on Leicester-square. On its other frontage, in Charing Cross-road, there is to be a ter- race" of shops, and above this ac- commodation for offices.

Mr. Deutsch's career has been ole of the most remarkable in the film industry.. Three years ago he ran 14 cinemas as à sideline. Now there are 125 Odeons open anh 75 more under construction. Employing 14 architects at once and an army of workmen, he has made it a policy to open a new cinema every fortnight. Each seats" from 1,000 to 1,500 persons.

It was in the Alhambra that one of London's Arit Alms was shown in 1896. During the war the thes- tre was the home of revues pro- duced by M. Andre Charlot and Bir Oswald Stoll. Of these "The Bing Boys,", starring George Ro- bey and Violet Lorraine, is pro- bably best remembered.

In recent years its history has been "characteristically varied. It was wired for talking films. "Walt zes from Vienna". was a great hit. in 1931. In 1933 a £50,000 com- pany was formed to convert it into a "palace of entertainment," and recently it has reverted to ballet.
