NEED FOR DO-OPERATION

"The greatest of philosophers has placed the good things of life in three categories: those that are good in themselves, those that are good by reason of their results, and those that are good both in them- selves and in their results. Friend- ship, is in the third category. The need for co-operation between Canton, and Hong Kong is uni- versally recognized by all of us in this Colony."

POPPY MAKING

To the institution of Poppy Day must be given the credit of setting up what is more or less an unique industry.

When the enormous possibilities of this annual sale of emblems WES 30 clearly demonstrated by the success of the first Appeal in 1921, the late Field-Marshal Earl Halg realised that a golden opportunity had presented itsell for providing employment for disabled ex-Service

Both during the War, and after- wards, the problem of the estab- Hishment in civil life of the men who had been disabled in the Em- pire's service was one of grave con- cern to Lord Halg, and one can I belleve that the Scouts in immagine with what great pleasure Hong Kong are as well led as he saw set up in South East London those in any other part of the in 1922 the first very small British world, and that this great organi- | Legion Poppy Factory. sation is disseminating principles which are bound to make them- selves more and more felt for good as time goes on.

At the outset, only ý disabled men were employed. Naturally it was impossible for them to make more than a small proportion of the total number of Popples required, but the undertaking grew with great rapidity, and it was not long before the entire needs of the Re- membrance Day Appeal were being met, and very satisfactorily too, by thé unaided efforts of the Legion's own workshopa.

The next morning saw us at the splendid University of Chungshan where Learning dwells, not cramp- ed by the confines of city tene- ments, but crowned by the hills and sky in a spacious country seat of broad acres and lordly halls.
