This appointment restores to the Royal Engineers an old milit- ary appointment, originally styled "Chief Engineer of the Kingdom,” which existed from the Restora- tion down to its abolition in 1802.
The holder of the appointment is titular head of the Corps and thus peaks with authority on questions of regimental import- ance, as does the Master Gunner!" St. James's Park, in the case of the Royal Artillery.

In this mechanical age there is natural interest in anything that has to do with the glamour and mystery of events that occur be- hind the scenes in the great in- dustries. This interest attains its highest pitch when it concerns, the lives of the dare-devil men who test cars and planes before they leave the factories.
All of which probably accounts for the enthusiasm with which an audience at the Majestic Theatre last night, greeted Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer's appropriately titled pic- ture, "Speed."
Lucien Hubbard, the producer, with Edwin L. Marin directing, has caught the charged atmosphere of * vast automobile" concern. at a time when its product is facing a revolutionary change that ray either make or break the company.
The cast presents James Stewart, Wendy Barrie. Uria Merkel, Wel- don Heyburn, Ted Healy. Ralph Morgan and Patricia Wilder.
Wandy Barrie
Wendy Barrie, playing the role of an executive's daughter working in the plant incognito, gives one of the most tharming characteriza- tions of her career.

CENSORSHIP OF DIARY OF LOCAL
FILMS
Sane Statement Of Official Policy
Recently, Lord Tyrrell of Avon, the film' censor, delivered a specch to a representative gathering of tim exhibitiors,
*Film Weekly "
saya.
It was the first time that the new censor and the exhibitors had got together since the death of Lord Tyrrell's predecessor, Edward Shortt, KC.
1
Lord Tyrrell's speech was an in- teresting. encouraging, essentially Bane statement of official policy,
During the year 1933-36 the board gave "U" certificates to 1,750 films, "A" certiäcates to 350. That re- presented a percentage of 83 "U's" to 17. A's"--a state of affairs which pleased Lord Tyrrell a lot...
Actually, however, many of these alms were short subjects. Of the feature films, 368 got Universal certificates and 318 Adult ones.
The "horrific” tims which won themselves a prominent part in last year's report are dismissed lightly in this one.
"They have died out, says Lord Tyrrell. Partly because local au- thorities have frowned on them-- more importantly because flmgoers haven't shown much interest in them.
That is a point whitch Carl Laemmle, Junior, might well con- sider before he starts producing them again.
The two main issues worrying the censor at the moment are the Increuse in propaganda (both poll- tical and religious) in films, and,^ queerly enough, the number of hos- pital scenes that have been crop- *ping up,
Propaganda of any kind he is de- termined to stamp out--though he points out that most of the protests about propaganda in alms are made by people who never go to the cinemas," anyhow.
He considers the hospital scenes (which he says are "unwholesome and do not cater for that relaxa- tion which the majority of audi- ences desire") are fading away like all other cycles."
The censorship board's pet scheme getting film producers to submit scenarios before the pic- ture is put into production--is com- ing along nicely.
The board has even taken a peek at foreign-made films which Erig ish producers are proposing to re- make in Anglicised versions.
