Government House Installations

The attention of all motorists is invited to the recent alterations in traffic signs outside Government House. In the past, difficulty has been experienced in securing the aufety of cars leaving Government House, owing to the fact that there was no method of stopping or slowing down traffic, proceeding along the main road.

CORRESPONDENCE

Dear Sir,--One sees a great deal in the local press nowadays about Germany's "great need for and

calontes-lost asa: right to." result of an unsuccessful gamble in war against the civilized world. In consequence of this war a cer tain number of ex-German Pacifit Islands were mandated to JAPAN by the League of Nations. In addition, two trame control lights have been installed to con- trol both east bound and west bound traffic. These lights will normally be unlighted, but when

Since its demolition, many cases of women and children coming for hospital treatment could not be taken in on acebunt of lack of nc- commodation. But for some of the more serious cases special arrange- ments had to be made in the other

Affiliated Hospitals for their ad mission. In consequence of such make-shift arrangements, the work of the other Hospitals has been put to much inconvenience.

BUILDING FUND COMMENCED

Some time back, the Committee, on discovering that white ants had made an inroad to the roof beams. realized that the Nethersole would have to be pulled down sooner or later. Repairs were undertaken to patch up the roof from time to time and the costs of such repairs bécame greater and greater every year. In anticipation of the even- tuality which has happened, "the Committee started, a few years ago, a Building Fund Campaign.

The funeral took place yester- day at the Mohamedan Cemetery of Mrs. Fatima Rumiahn, whose death occurred in the morning at her residence in Wong Ne! Cheong Road. The deceased lady was the wife of Mr. D. Rumjabin, the well- known lawn bowler of Craiger.gower Cricket Club.

Mrs. Rumjaha had been in "in- different health for some time ana was confined to bed for the past week.

The burial rites were conducted by the Muslim community's mulvi, Noor Shah.

During the last afty years, the Alice Memorial and the Affiliated Hospitals have been and still are generously supported by annuál subscriptions from all sections of continuing the community. This support is indeed a testimony of the appreciation by the public of the good work done by these Hos- pitals and a proof of the need of their existence in the Colony.

Interesting Mombasa -Speech By Kobe... Consul

There was a large audience when Mr. F. S. Souza gave on interest- ing Mombasa speech, at the Portu- guese Institute, amongst "whom were the local Japanese Consul. Mr. Mogake and his family to- gether with several Japanese re- aldents Mr. Seuss had with him some dima which it is learned, will to be handed over to the Foreign' Office in Lisbon.

Before screening the alma, he was asked by Mr. Abreu, President of the Institute to say a few words on the subject, and in reply Mr. Souza said:

"We Portuguese whether métro- politans or colonials. have every right to be proud of our country's achievements which entitle our nation to occupy a prominent.. niche marking the progress of Western civilization. Our country Lamal and yet we possess co- lonies having an area thirty-six mother times larger than the country. We are the third colonial power in 'the world, and our ad- ministracion of the colonies is

happily free from the turmoils of revolts and other political agita- tions. Portugal is one of few coun- "tries able to balance its Budget and meet her foreign debts. Thanks to the genius of our great statesman Salazar, 'our country' is passing through an era of pros- in the perity.
