Woman Arrested On Possession Charge

Chung Yeung, 33, married wo- man of 16 Centre Street, appeared before Mr. K. Keen at the Central Magistracy yesterday morning on a charge of being found in posses- sion of heroin pills and opium. Defendant pleaded guilty to the offence but stated that the drugs

were intended for curative purposes for her husband who was suffering from tuberculosis and was paralys- ed in one leg. Mr. d'Almada Re- medios appeared for the defence.

The prosecution told the Court that three envelopes, each contain- ing 100 heroin pills, were found on the defendant's premises, as well The quantity of opium. second charge, that of keeping oplum, had been withdrawn but the authorities took a very serious view to the possession of heroin plis..

Mr. d'Almada Remedios stated that the defendant's husband had to take daily about 40 pills in the morning and six in the evening to relieve himself of his sufferings. The Invalid was introduced to the Court.

Found guilty by a jury at the Criminal Sessions yesterday, woman, Luk Ngan Ming, was sen- tenced by the Chief Justice, Str Atholl MacGregor, to twelve month' hard labour on charges af importing from China 654 coun terteit Hong Kong ten cents pieces and possession of the coins. The following Jury was etr:- panelled:-Messrs. C. H. Benson (foreman), A. Komorsky. H. 'W. Pomeroy, Li Kwan-shek. Lung Chung-yu, R. Cheung Chee Chung and Chan Kwan-yuen.

Mr. Abbott said that the defen- dant arrived from Canton aboard the ss. Kwangtung at 1 a.m. on She was in the September 20. third class accommodation and was sitting on a heap of cargo. On the approach of a female searcher of the revenue depart- ment. the defendant threw away & packet which was later found to contain bad coins. The de- fendant was searched and more coins were found in her left lower jacket pocket. She was taken to Central Police Station and the case was banded over to Det- Sergt. Pilkington.

In her statements in answer to the charges, the accused said that she was given the coins by a wo- man who promised to pay her two dollars to take the coins to the Ko Shing teahouse. Defendant also stated that she had no inten- tion to utter the coins,

Det.-Sergt. Whiteroft, attached to the Treasury. who examined the coins said that they were the best imitations he had discovered so far.

While some passengers on board the steamer Sal On, enroute Lu Hong Kong, were sleeping, Tang Kai-chung, 22, unemployed, deftly extracted gold rings from their fingers. This was revealed in Court yesterday morning when the ac- K. cused appeared before Mr. Keen at the Central Magistracy on a charge of larceny of two gold rings from his fellow passengers. The passengers discovered their losses when they awoke and im- mediately reported the thefts to the ship's watchman who, on mak- ing enquiries from other passen- gers the steerage hold, found that defendant had been seen near the ring owners. The man ad- mitted the thefts when arrested and he was handed over to the Hong Kong Police when the vessel docked.

Appearing before Mr. Q. A. A Macfadyen at the Kowloon Magis“ 38, tracy yesterday, Lal Hung, unemployed, was charged with larceny of a hand bag from Wang Chun, 25. married woman, at the junction of Pol Ho Street and Hal Tan Street, on October 19.

Sergt. Forrest prosecuted and. stated that about 7p.m. on the day in question, the complainant was walking to the Sham Shui Po Ferry, and when at the junction of Pel Ho Street and Hai Tan Street, she felt some one behind her. A hand was then brushed over her face and her eyes began to water. She noticed a male in dark clothing who attempted to pull her bag. A struggle ensued during which the complainant fell on the ground with the man still holding her bag.

An alarm was raised by passers- by and accused ran duwn Pel Ho Street

The woman gave chase into Hal Tan Street. The defen- dant attempted to hide behind a pillar but when he saw the com- plainant he ran back along Pel Ho Street.

By this time the complainant noticed that the man could not run very fast as he had a limp. At this moment ar Indian Con- stable came "on the scene and arrested the defendant.

Sergt. Forrest said that he was only duty when the accused was brought to the station, and marks

of white powder were found in the woman's face which smelt like pepper. The complainant was taken to the hospital to have medical intention 15 her eves were inflamed.

A small packet was found on the defendant which contained white powder.
