THE AMATEUR

GENTLEMAN'

"The Amateur Gentleman," which Douglas Fairbanks, Jar.. co- stars with Elissa Landi is showing to-day at the King's Theatre.".

Adapted from Jeffery Famol's best-selling novel of the same name. "The Amateur Gentleman" is, without hesitation. the best produced and most thrilling and

drama colourful costume

ever screened Doug. Fairbanks. Jnr., has not allowed his cares as a pro- dycer to weigh him down, and in scoring a personal triumph he re- veals a virile personality strongly reminiscent of his famous father.

The picture is packed with, ac- tion from start to finish. One of the highlights is the knuckle fight between Barnabas and the "Lincoln Butcher." The between Fair- romantic scenes banks and Elissa Landi, are 25- terpieces of restraint, Gordon Harker's Natty Bell is a perfect gam of cockney characterisations and is, I should say. about the best performance he has ever given. Esme Percy stands out in a rather smaller part than usual as a "fop." Prominent among the rest of the cast are Frank Pet- tingell, Basil Sydney. Allicle Stewart and Hugh Willams.

MUSIC FOR THE CORONATION ·

Following Precedent

HONOUR FOR BRITISH COMPOSERS

Music plays a very important part in the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey, and at the last two ceremonies the most eminent British composers have been invit- ed to supplement the traditional music of the service.

This" precedent is again to be followed, and already several of our leading musicians are being ap- pruached to contribute to the pro- gramme that is now being prepared by Dr. E. Bullock, the urganist anu choirmaster of the Abbey, who will be assisted in his task by Sir Henry Walford Davies, the Master of the King's Music, and others..

There is good reason to believe that Mr. Eric Coates is to be invited to write the solemn processional march which

past. years Among these older works are Tallis's setting of the Litany and Merbeck's for the Nicene Creed. The former is now over 350 years old. The most celebrated number of all, however, is Handel's setting of the anthem. "Zadok the Priest."* This was first performed at the Coronation of George IL In. 1727. For this occasion Handel also com-

Sir Hubert Parry also composed the "Te Deum" for the last Coro- nation, when he conducted it ri person. The musical programme was arranged on that occasion by the late Sir Frederick Bridge, for many years organist and choir master at the Abbey. There was then a choir of 450 voices, that of the Abbey being strengthened by the gentlemen and boys of the Chapels Royal and specially select ed singers from other London churches. This was assisted by the pick of London's orchestras to the number of seventy. These numbers are likely to be closely approximat- ed on the next occasion.

Sir Frederick Bridge was also re- sponsible for the composition of the Anthem sung during the Ser- vice of Homage. The soloist was the late Edward Lloyd and it is doubtful If he was ever heard to better effect, despite his age.
