FUND GROWS ACCOUNTANT-

A $200,000 Donation

It is reported that the greatest enthusiasm prevails among the Chinese citizens of the Colony in the matter of raising funds for the pürchase of Aying-máchines · In honour of Marshal Chiang Kai- shek's 50th Birthday Anniversary.

Already over $140,000 has been subscribed, and Sir Robert Ho Tung being at the head of the list with a contribution of $100,000.

But yesterday, to the surprise of everybody. Mr. Fok Chi-ting. a Chinese millionaire of Capton, top ped the 1st with the handsome contribution of $200.000 which has already been telegraphed to the Birthday Fund Raising Committee in Nanking.

It is said that local Japanese re- sidents have "been greatly affected 'by the fervid patriotism of the Hong Kong Chinese, and that some have even added their small.con- tributions to the local house to house collecting committees in un- félgued admiration of Chinese patriotism.**

A daring daylight robbery was perpetrated in the heart of the City yesterday afternoon shortly before 245 p.m.

The victim was Yu Wal Ting, 58 years, accountant of the Foo Lung building contractors, No. 150, Wel- lington Street, ground floor.

An earlier police report stated that two or three men robbed Yu Wal Ting of $2,500 in banknotes and made good their escape.

The incident occurred in D'Agui- lar Street near its intersection with Wellington Street which one of the Colony's busiest centres. The robbers were unarmed, it is stated:

About 2.43 p.m. yesterday after- noon, the victim was walking in Wellington Street followed by three Chinese men. Suddenly one of the men threw a basket, which had a dark piece of cloth inside, over his head, while the other two men snatched away a bag'in which he had the money.

It is believed the money was drawn from the Bank of China yesterday afternoon.

"DORADO" DEPARTS

The R.M.A. Dorado left for Penang yesterday morning carry- ing 78.052 kilos of mail, and 13.450 kilos of freight. No passengers were carried. The Dorado is piloted by Capt. J. H. Lock.

Harchand Singh, constable, ap- peared before Mr. W. Schofield at the Central Magistracy yesterday' afternoon, charged with giving a bribe of $220- to Lance Sergeant C. Gough on September 15, with a view to influence his 'conduct as a public servant.

Mr. E. H. Willams, Assistant Attorney General, appeared for the Crown, while Mr. G. S. Hugh Jones appeared for the defence.

Mr. Williams said that the duties of Sergt. Gough were to make re- commendations of guards to ships and ashore.

Sergt. Gough had been stationed in the guards office since July 18, as assistant to Sub-Inspector Baker, who was in charge of the guards.

On August 15, about 7.25 p.m. Sergt. Gough was having dinner with Sergt. Farquhar in their quarters, when the defendant ap Beared and stated he wanted to see Bergt Gough.

When asked what his business was the defendant took a bottle of whisky from his pocket and offer- ed it as a present to Bergt. Gough, who refused it and told the da- fendant that he did not drink, The defendant suggested beer, which was again refused.
