One of the most colourful periods In history has been brought to the screen by Douglas Fairbanks, Jnr..

his latest production," "The Amateur Gentleman." which Ls showing at the King's Theatre to- day.

Adapted from the Jeffrey Farnol navel of the same name, the story is laid in England during the time of the Prince Regent.

Into this romantic background the producers have woven drama packed with action and thrill from start to Anish The picture is a triumph of swift direction which does not allow the pace to słow down for an instant. The younger Fairbanks is revealed as an actor- of the first-rank, and the possessor of a pleasing accent woich betrays no hint of his American origin.”

He plays the role of Barnabas Barty, the educated son of an inn- keeper, who enters London socletý in as effort to dear his father of a false charge of theft, for which ne has been sentenced to death. Accompanied by Natty Bell, faithful servant from the Inn, Barnabas installs himself in a [ashionable rooms and following a chance meeting with the Prince Regent, he becomes a leading member of the "smart set.".

He falls in love with Lady Cleone, but his romance is endangered when he wins large sums from her brother, Ronald, at the card table. Barnabas suspects that Ronald is guilty of the crime for which his father is being punished, but his doubts are allayed and he turns his attentions to Chichester, a penniless admirer of Lady Cleone; Barnabas helps his father 10 es- cape and then returns to town to find a woman whom he recognises as Chichester's mistress, murdered in his rooms.

That night Barnabas attends a ball at the Carlton House. and rival forestalls him by having him hopes to trap Chichester, but his

arrested.

Lady Cleone to the inn where his Barnabas eccapes and drives father is hiding. Chichester fol- lows with the police and in an exciting denouement turns the tables and Chichester as a thief and mur- derer.

The designer, a young Ameri- can named Jack Thomas, has watched It grow from draughts- man's plans into a thing of polish- ed steel and whirring electric mo- tors, and is now engaged in the construction of three only slightly less complicated "offspring" which will cost about £2,000 apiece.
