Members of the German com- munity of Hong Kong have again manifested their intense loyalty to

AFFAIRS OF A BABOON FAMILY

"}

About Ave miles from our" camp a colony of baboons lived on the banks of the Guaso Nyiro river...... I can safely say that the expert- ences we had with these baboons were among the most interesting and were certainly the funniest- that we have ever had with wild animais. Every move they made, was either interesting or comic, and there must have been two. thousand of them.

Osa and I have always insisted that the baboon is, the most in- telligent of the monkey family. though that s 0. dangerous thing to say for many people confuse the monkeys with the apes and so mistake our mean- ing. But here we had a chance to get better acquainted and see.. ut we were right. At first they were all just baboons," but gradually we were able to distinguish some of them by their individualities, and we even went so far as to name a few for instance, one fine big fellow seemed to be a sort of head man. He had his own parti- cular tree

Sometimes he would yawn so much that he would get us to yawning, and when we laughed at him it would make him so angry that he would bristle up his hair...

We were soon able to distinguish different families, as well as dif- terent individuals, for we would see.. the same groups together day after day. The mothers and fathers would often caff the youngsters until the Httle fellows would roli over and over, screaming to the limi; of their lungs. To family affairs

these of the other's would pay any at- tention, but sometimes a member of one family would cuff a young- ster of another family, and then there was a battle. These inter- family aghts were often quite ex- citing and the noise was terrible.
