PRETENCES Army Deserters Bound Over

Two deserters from the 154th

Cantonese Army were brought be fore Mr. Macfadyen at the Kowloon

Court yesterday, for obtaining food by false pretences from a stall la Argyle Street.

The defendants were Mak Yau, 25. To Wa Man, 26, both unem- ployed.

Det-Sergt. Davis stated that the defendants were descrters from the Cantonese Army, and were non- combatant ammunition carriera. They deserted because their pay was in arrears.

The defendants had a meal at the stall, and when the stall holder asked for the money. they said that they had a friend in Bulkeley Street, and that he would pay for them. The defendants said that when they could locate him he would make arrangements for their return to the country. The friend was not been found. It was a long time since they last saw him.

The defendants came from Lim Chan to Kong Mun where they ob- lained free passage to Hong Kong.

They were each bound over and will be sent back to Canton.

terday, charged with the embezzle ment of $20 from Chung Tung Chau, married woman, 890, Canton Road, received by him on account of the complainant.

An amended charge alleging the embezzlement of $785.95, was added.

Det-Sergt. J. Hunter stated that between January 13 to September 25, the defendant received from 10 different shops payments of money which he did, not enter in the book, and never mentioned anything to the complainant when he returned to the shop.

When the complainant asked for the money. the defendant sald that the shops had bad business and could not pay.

The defendant was arrested in

Mr. Balfour bound over defend- ant on a personal bond of $100, and ordered the, defendant to pay $26 to complainant as amends.

Leung Shut Ho, master of a fish- ing boat, was charged before Mr. W. Schofield at the Central Magis- tracy yesterday for the possession of opium.

Sub.-Insp. J. Dredge said that on October 5 at 9 am, he received information to watch for "a junk entering Hong Kong at Tin Wan, near Island Road.

He boarded a flabing junk and found in the centre hold four large and three small tins of opium, with a large quantity of raw oplum wrapped in cloth.

Defendant stated that he did not know what were the goods stored on his boat.

Appearing for the defendant, Mr. D. Brittain Evans said that as the case might be acrimonious, and that it would probably take some time, he would ask for an adjournment.

The hearing was adjourned to October 13 at 2.30 p.m.

THEFT FROM JUNK

Two junkmen were charged be- fore Mr. Macfadyen, at the Kow- loon Court yesterday, for stealing trom a junk, between September 12 and 27, an iron anchor, a'canvas sheet, two cannons and 21 cattles of gunpowder from Tam Wan, master of the junk.
