PORTUGUESE CELEBRATION
Last year, on the same occasion. I remarked that Anglo-Portuguese friendship was not only on paper, but was manifested, in this. Co- lony, from personal relations in private life, to official intercourse.
CORDIAL CO-OPERATION Naturally, my short residence in Hong Kong at that time, did not bermit me more than a slight ob- servation of the facts, but I had seen enough to awaken my grati- tude. However, to-day, with 1 more perfect knowledge of the kindness, courtesy, protection and generosity of the British people and' officials towards the Portu- guese citizens who have made "their homes in Hong Kong, Ï' am very pleased to avall myself of This solemn National Day of my Country, to express publicly and solemnly, my sincere and grateful acknowledgment, coupled with the thanks of the Portuguese Colb- munity, and also, to remark that in my omcial capacity, when it has been necessary to be the mid- dle-man between the Hong Kong and Macao authorities, I have al- ways found the same cordial co- operation and understanding as might be expected between bro-. thers.
Usually in receptions of the character of this one, the Consul is supposed to say a few words in praise of his own Country and about the signification of the -an- niversary. I feel however, that on this occasion I cannot do better in praise of my Country than by ex- alting its loyalty to the Anglo- Portuguese Alliance, which has bound so closely our nations which have spread their Colonial Em- pires throughout the world and have fought side by side for the maintenance of universal peace.
GRATITUDE EXPRESSED About the meaning of this our National Day, as the Republic was established for the Welfare of the Nation, accordingly, on behalf of Portugal, I express my gratitude to the Hong Kong authorities for all they have done for the Portuguese Community of this Colony.
