Valuable Gift To Buchanan Society
--——
A ROYAL MINIATURE-
A miniature of James VI. of Scotland and I. of England, paint- ed by Isaac Oliver, has been pre- sented to the Buchanan Society by Mr. William George Buchanan of Clairinch; a" collateral descen- dant of George Buchanan, ・ the famous Latinist and historian who was Privy Purse of Mary Queen of Scots and tutor to King James.
Intimation of the gift, was made at a meeting of the directors of the Buchanan Society in Glasgow
recently.
Mr. Buchanan, the donor of tlus valuable guit, whose London re- sidence is in Park Lane. recently bought Clairinch, an, island in` Loch Lomond, from the Duke of Montrose. He purchased the miniature last year from an anti- que dealer in Surling, whose shop Is Just over a stone's throw from the castle where King James was' tutored by George Buchanan. The painter, Isade Oliver, was borti about the year 1556 and died in 1617.
It is a por:rult of King James, enclosed in a locket at enamel and One gold measuring 24in. by 21.
A ROMANTIC HISTORY The miniature would appear to have 1 romantic history, but in- quiries in Stirling have not, thrown much light on the mystery of its origin. Messrs John Yates and Son, antique dealers, Spittal Street. whose little shop has been visited by foreign royalties and other dis- tinguished curio hunters, acquired. the portrait privately several years
ago.
They are unable to reveal the source of their purchase 'as they are under a pledge of secrecy In the matter, but it would appear to have come from a local family in whose possession it has been for generations. The original owners were probably descendants of the famous George Buchanan.

Little interest was attracted to the miniature, evidently, until Mr. Buchanan recently visiced the Stirling antique shop, although Messrs Yates realised that it was a valuable article. It was at first thought that the miniature was the work of Nic- holas Hilliard, a notable sixteenth- century painter of portraits in. miniature, who worked in the style of Holbein King James's portrait was submitted for expert opinion to Dr. George Williamson, Child- ford, Surrey, who stated that it was not by Hilliard, but had un- doubtedly been painted by Isaac Oliver. Dr. Williamson pointed out that he could see traces well-known monogram: "I O" on the miniature in gold, as Wäs Oliver's custom, although the let- ters were slightly injured by rea- son of the dropping off of a tiny name of The Mec Sing Cinema morsel of the gold leaf,
