CORONATION YEAR

Longer And Brighter London Season

London will have a longer sea- son next year.

The King's choice of May 12 as the Coronation date means that it will begin earlier and cause the organisers of a number of the more important social events to hold them later.

The Royal Military Tournament is usually considera to mark the beginning of the season, and opens during the first week in May.

Next year the official duties of many of those concerned in it will not permit of their taking part in an Olympla show at that time.

Accordingly the Tournament will open on May 27 and will con- tinue until June 12.

This change makes it necessary for the International Horse Show, also at Olympia. to begin later. An official of the Show såld:

"We shall hold our Show next year from Thursday, June 17, to Saturday, June 28." Instead of be-, ginning at the end of May, as we did this year."

Society Blamed For Farmers' Position

"Society has not given farmers a chance. They are Insulated, isolated, and disintegrated."

M: L. "K. Elmhirst, of Darting ton Hall. Devon, made this cri- ticism In his presidential address to the International Committee of Agricultural Economists at St. An- drews recently.

Behind the farming system there must he, he said, a structure of social service, health, education, transport, lekure, and recreation.

Behind all the problems was the fundamental factor of the land in England. The picture was chaotic. One day they might see a farm

the Tug on economic lines, and next a competition for that farm by the speculative builder or the factory. There was no one to ace that society got the best use it could out of its land..
