EARLY AUTUMN HATS

Most of the high hats for the autumn have crowns which can be modified to suit the wearer. Sports and tailored brimmed shapes in felt have high-blocked conical crowns. The brims are small and flat, or slightly on one side, and short at the back the trimming is generally a tailored feather quill or sweeping pheasants' plum. age. set to accentuate the forward Иде.

On a copper-coloured felt hat the irregularly squared high crown is drawn over to one side and held by a blue petersham knot; the same colour bands the crown. A dark brown antelope felt hat has a moderately high crown, mould- ed to a cone in the front, and slop ing sharply away to a short back, where It is finished with suede strappings and a tab of hunter's green.

By contrast there are cap shapes with vilor brims: the crown and the brim fut to a squared line in front, A single feather quill is posed at the back, Small sports bonnets, cut with right-angled eldes look well in the fine wool material of suits. or in Auvetyn. grosgrain or velveteen.

Three colours to a chimney-top are quite usual, and the wearer can carry the colours also in the tweed or wool suiting. Browns and r^. mato, or brown and green, are tav- ourites. Pewter-grey and wine are good shades to crown the Kray tweed or flanned suit. These col- ors in tlers of felt are cut on the slant. This gives a youthful and slightly rakish appearance.

The high crowns of town hats show a great deal of detall and fr- regularity. On a tobacco brown felt hat the tall crown is narrow- ed to an irregular point; held. In place by an orange-coloured marabou mount; the narrow brim is slightly rolled and lifted at the. sides. Hats and caps with Direc- toire or postilion-shaped crowns in fait or hatters' plush should look well with coats cut with a flare at the knees or hem. A wine-colour- - ed felt has a small forward-thrus- sing brim and a high crown which is drawn over in tucks to one side and trimmed with a long parrot- green quill

Velvet turbans have high crow.LS and swathed folds across the fore. head. Height is further suggested by a twist or bow of the velvet or by a high feather mount. Toques of antelope, velvet, or grosgrai show the narrow long back to front line, and are often trimmed only with a bow of fine mesh vell- ing, high on one side, and folded twice over the eyes., Berets, may be of felt or velvet with rounded thickened edges and trimming on the centre at the top. Large flat velvet berets are to be worn care- lessly and well back, A, narrow snug-fitting beret of brown "felt is drawn close to the head on one side in long fine tucks, which are held in place by a soft pink feather mount.

Feather caps made wholly of pstrich, "coq," or mall"minoches are of a single colour or shad-

ed tones which harmonize or con- trast, Off-the-face bonnets may have feather curls tiny wings, or bows to break the forehead line. A brown felt halo hat is trimmed all round the face with anall. fine-

y cut feathers. On a navy-blue cap worn well on the back of the head the sole trimming is a white bird mount. A felt shovel hat with. a fat rounded crown and short is trimmed with three felt flowers in front and a narrow felt bow at the back,

This new movement shows great ingenuity on the part of the mil- linery experts, who have realised that the idea of adding age ruined the chances of the high hat. They started pulling it slant-ways and forward, and making it up is beautiful colours and becoming lines.

FASHION FABRICS.

In Paris And New York

There is a reindeer woollen by Rodier, like satin wool, which is an interesting novelty for evening suits. Broadcloth trimmed with velvet is seen in dresses, coats and evening outfits. There are many velvet blouses, and many velvet dresses with wool suits or coats.

Rough-textured linen and 110- holstery fabrics are in greater demand than ever in New York. Many of them have the appear- ance of hand-loomed humespuns. and they usually have a natural or off-white, background, striped 'horizontally in brilliant colours,

A particularly interesting one just brought out by a 'leading cotton manufacturer has a natu- ral homespun background and is striped with thick cable threads of cotton chenille in three tones of deep blue, green or brown.

These fabrics are made in 100-- inch widths, too, so that they can be used as bedspreads for single

beds without anything more than binding..**

Paris is adopting the military influence in hats. This example from Eris, in Persian lamb, tas- selled, stresse the point. The fur necklet shown is of two foxtails.

Wool taffeta is a textile novelty. for suits or coat dresses launched by several of the large bouses.

.Pile velvets iri rich colours and new plaid lames in, gold with large black and white velvet crosaing Are the most popular fabrics for evening.

Broadcloth is far and away the. leading daytime fabric, and many. Evening ensembles are also made of broad cloth.

AUTUMN COLOURS

Colour contraata in some of the new autumn ensembles are a ift. tle startling at first; but what ap- poars crude at the moment, be cause we have become so used dur- ing the last few months to pastel shades, will prove in actual wear to be very attractive.

This news, announced in London by the British Colour Council. is of the utmost importance. A change of colour means hundred of thou-. sands of pounds in revenue to dress-makers and shops wherever women live.
