London, September 23.
·
The battle for possession of Madrid, which is now 'almost encircled by insurgent forces is expected to begin within the next twenty-four hours.
In the north, the insurgent and Government fgrees are en- trenched on either side of the Guadarrama range, but at certain points the insurgents have reached the Madrid side. threatening the general headquarters of the Government forces. In the Insurgent north-east, the road to Saragossa is dominated by forces holding Siguenza.
ון
In the south, the Government forces hold Toledo, but they are hampered owing to the' adamant defenders at Alcazar who, though expelled from the stables and granaries of the citadel, have now taken refuge in the cellars in the hope that the relief promised them in insurgent plane messages will arrive 'within forty-eight hours. The south-east remains the only free route for Government supplies and reinforcement through to Valencia.

INSURGENT FRONT
of
In the south-west, the insur- gent front stretches from Torrijos. Torty-Ave miles from Madrid, to Quismodo. five miles east Maqueda, and forty-one miles LIDM the capital, where Govern- ment forces are making a stand following their defeat at Maqueda.
This is a likely quarter for the main thrust against the capital as the excellent wide motor road runs to Madrid over open country.
To the west, the insurgent rcrth-west and south-west forces effected a junction, but the moun- country is only thinly
tainous held.
Thus the insurgents almost sur round their objective, the only gap being from Toledo to a point just east of Aranjuez, which is a rali- way Junction vital to the Govern- miens forces and the sole avenue of retreat.
