BLACK

PRE-VIEW

Many new colours and hew ma- terials are used in the dresses for the new season, but black is po- pular with almost every designer. Paris, at any rate, still regards a black dress as the smartest, a well- dressed woman can'wear.

Black velvet is allied with cloth, with faille, with lace, with fur. Do- Ing things by halves is a fashion- able trick.

A alim-fitting evening dress of" black cloth has an elongated train- gular plece of black velvet inset down the front.

The whole of the back is black velvet, matching the cloak

An evening dress is black velvet in front and black fallle at the back, where the skirt, arranged in billowing lines, flows out to form a short train,

Another dress, of black velvet and lace, shows the velvet in front, the lace, being arranged in frills at the back.

In a tailored suit, the coat, which is broadcloth at the back, is seal musquash in front. This arrange- ment is reversed on the short, nar- row, allored skirt

Evening dresses have skirts allt at the sides, at the back and in front or ar intervals round the hem. Sitting is not confined" to narrow, straight skirts, but appears also on models which are gored from the waist downwards.

Costs or capes

are worn with inost evening dresses. Shapes range from short Eton Jackets to clegant, sweeping ground-length coats.

The first is a rich deep Mai- maison carnation tone, the sec- and has more than a dash of egg plant purple in its composi- tion. The Baroque models shown in these colours emphasised the roluptuousness of wide sleeves and the luminous richness of satin in full billowing skirta.

Mr. Vai Bt. Cyr has designed some generous skirts. They are as aweepingly lavish as sleeves and collara. Even tweed outfits have wide, folded back petal collars rent- ing on the shoulders.

So great was the sleeve interer!

at this showing that the designer sought inspiration from such wide-

ly different things as skyscrapers,

and even tea caddles!

There were bustles of roses, and shoulders pillowed with them. Muffs appeared fur edged and microscople-rather like it tle foot warmers of velvet and fur.

Bolero bodices were popular in ine Collection and one black frock of this type, with a wide cum- merbund belt of gay striped silk, had the silk echoed by a striped Batin petticoat fastened to the mannequin's knees.

A winter bride's gown had such enormous white fur cuffs that it

· was hard to tell them from a muff; another wedding dress had open- work embroidery, a farthingale basque, and a heart-shaped inset on the train:
