I began to save in Cairo. It was a very slow business. Then I had an idea to put "Egypt on the map." I have often been very hard up for money, but never for ideas. I Went to a conference of business men in Cairo and told them, with the utmost confidence, some of the things they ought to đồ.

I pretty well exhausted my bank balance to take up the first lot of shares and then I spent several hectic days in "raising the wind." It was a stormy job, but I suc-

So I was just in the right mood

Gritting my teeth, I began to "average." Now "averaging sounds a simple operation. but sometimes it proves very costly. It simply means this:-

I began to average in July 1914. The shares went down and down and down The mere humour of war knocked the bottom out of

the markets.

When the actual confict broke out prices had gone all to hell and Chelekens were in the nethermost pit. Everything. I nad was lost barring the share certificates.

To-day I still hold 3,500 Chele- kena, bought at all sorts of prices, but averaging about 2 pound aplace. I think they have as no- minal value now of about four- pence.

If he had kept the contract note and merely sent me my proft in due course the idea of loss had .never entered my mind-my entire career might have been changed. But the contract note naturally bore the brokers' names, There was a stamp on it, too, of course, and details of the whole transac- tion, cost of shares, amount of commission, stamp fee and setting date.

Now my relative had only bought Afty shares for me. 1 thought two shillings profit a share after Daying brokerage nct, on a "tip” again. I said "No! would be paltry. But two shillings on-suy-500 shares. That would be £50 and well worth picking up. I stared at the contract note a long, time before I rang up the brokers. With my heart in my mouth I asked if they would make the 50 into 500.

That was my arst personal deal with any broker,
