"A Good Lot Of Servants"
There is an army of men whose work is taken very much for granted but it is of primary importance to the health of the community. Wet or sunny weather they go about their task, and if it were not for them, existence in this "Riviera of the Orient" of ours, would scarcely be tolerable. They are the 900 street cleaners. Credits nos bestowed on them because they are taken for granted: at frst sight their task sernis too simple and prosaic to be of interest to the general public.
There is one organisation, how- ever, that is fully alive to the good work executed by these men every day of the year-an organisation where careful and reliable super- vision is essential to see that every cleansed. spot in the colony is This is the Sanitary Department.
An official of this organisation said, to a representative of the. "Hong Kong Daily Press" yaster- day about the street cleaners, or "scavenging lane coolies" as they are also known, "They are a good lot of servants. They work 3654 days a year, the only official holiday being Chinese New Year, But you know what the streets
additional 19.5 tons of retuse was removed in Hong Kong and 518 cons on the mainland. This was composed in the main of leaves strewn over the highways and by- ways.
Refuse from
the Colony and mainland is removed by a fleet of barges to Kun Tong, situated the mainland, between Ngau Sze Wan and Lyeemoon, where it is dumped as a basis for a large reclamation scheme in the bay..

In addition, 128 "cleaning" coolles are employed, their work having nothing to do with street cleaning. Their task is cleaning and a certain number of them are daily employed in rat- collecting. Last year the total number of rats caught was 24,676 In Hong Kong and 97.575 in Kow- loon,
under the direction of Dr. Tancred Borealus. Professor of the History of Art at London University, and Mr J. Charlton, a well-known ar-
