Fear of Communism
Position In Wuchow
Coolies Making New Forts
"It is significant that the fear in Wachow is more that some form of Communism may break out than netual fighting. 1 don't know what makes them so frightened. They have been frightened before and things have quietened down." was the opinion of Dr. Robert E. Beddoe, MD. when speaking about the political situation in Wuchow in the course of an interview with a "Daily Press representative yesterday,
"They are certainly expecting trouble up there." he said. “The night before I left the people were more excited than they have ever been before. Evidently they thought that the Central Govern- ment forces were going to proceed up, the West river right away.
"They have sent garrisons to all their forts, armed the policemen, and commanded the river sampans to clear out which is an unusual sight in China town.
"We have been having, people say thousands but I say hundreds, of coolles working all night on the hills, which are brilliantly lighted. making new forts."
Here To Operate
Dr. R. E. Beddoe, who is superin- tendent of the Stout Memorial Hospital, Wuchow, arrived in Hong Kong as the result of a telegraphic
serious
message to perform a operation on Mrs. Thompson, of the Shul Chow mission' fleld. Mrs. Thompson is a patient at the French Hospital.
Dr. Beddoe is a member of the American Southern Baptists, and in an interview with a "Daily Press" reporter stated that he had been in China for 27 years, The Stout Memorial Hospital was the first hospital established in Kwang al over 30 years ago...... ·

Mission Membership
I cannot say that there has
been tremendous increase in actual membership of the mission during my stay in China,
There has been some," was his reply.
"The actual number of Church members in the two southern pro- vinces of the mission, Kwangtung and Kwangsi, are about the same.” stated Dr. Beddoe.
Dr. Beddoe explained that be- sides medical work. the mission also did educational and evange- istio work among the Chinese in the two provinces.
WHAT IS NEWS?
WHEN MUTTON IS DRESSED-UP LIKE LAMB
Inaccuracy And Antiquity Combined
WHAT IS NEWS?
If you had glanced at the big, bold, black headlines in a section of the evening prest yesterday you would have come to this conclusion, namely. that news was something which happened about two years ago in the mundane matter of a purchase of a property in Ice House Street by the Govern
ment.
This item of news" was flared in headlines known as "three deckers," whilst immediately be neath was the rumoured price paid for this Lee House Street corner property. Quite a choice example of inaccuracy and antiquity,
Well, the "Hong Kong Daily Press" is determined that`it shall print all the news that is worth printing, and as a story may be old enough to be new, the Editor has decided to "reveal" the naughty manner in which the mutton his-
tory has been dressed-up" as lamb

With a great faufare of publicity the Government stated that this was to be the start of a compre- hensive and costly Central District developmental scheme, and the payment of $257,000 for this one IN property: was not but the in- auguration of what promised to develop into an orgy of spending. However, the new Goverfor, Bir Andrew Caldecott, very wisely exer- cised his power and the develop- mental scheme has been aban- doned.
