Paris, August 24. Heavy fighting continued at the various fronts on Sunday A squadron of Nationalist planes bombarded the port of Malaga. Bombs on the great oil tanks of that port caused a tremendous conflagration The Nationalists have estimated that at least 500,000 tons of rasoline were destroyed in the flames.

The troops of General Franco continued their advance on Madrid, They defeated two detachments of Red Militia, captur- ing a great deal of war, materials.

On the San Sebastian front the Nationalist troops continued the encirclement, and it is now asserted that the city is com pletely cut off from the dutside world.

In Aragon. the Catalan Red Militia have again assumed the offensive, and attacked the town of Feruci. Although the at- tack was supported by artillery, the defenders of the city suc- ceeded in maintaining their positions, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy 。།。

11

On other fronts the positions" remained almost unchanged, the fighting on Sunday being restricted to minor activities.

BOMBERS OVER MADRID

The aerial bombardment of Madrid on Saturday is declared to be the marking of a new stage in the civil war,

From the Nationalist headquar- ters in Burgos it is declared, that na tewer than 23 large three- motored bombers took part in the action. The pilots of the planes had the strictest instructions to spare the residential parts of the city, and to drop bombs only on military objectives. The bombs struck barracks and other military buldings and caused numerous

conflagrations,

The troops of the Popular Front]- were apparently completely taken by surprise and the anti-aircraft detachments were also not pre-

pared, their fire being completely

ineffective.

All planes that took part in the action have safely returned to their base in Valladolid.- Transocean Neser Reynier.

"DEFENDING LIBERTY

Contrasting Note Struck By M. Herriot

("Hong Kong Daily. Press" Special)

Paris, August 24.

The French Federation of Labour held a congress at Lille on Sunday, which was tiended by roughly 100,800 persons. Ad- dressing the gathering, the leader of the Federation, 31, JouhanK, once more repeated that the French workers could not remain neatral in the Spanish civil war, which was a struggle of "de- mocracy against reaction."

M. Jouhaux added that the workers could not afford to re- main impassive regarding the outcome of the Spanish civil war even if the Governments were forced to take up a cautious vffi- cial attitude.

"By supporting the Spanish comrades the French workers will defend the cause of liberty and peace," he said.
