Chiang Still Hopes For Peaceful Settlement

Shangbal,' August 20.

An official spokesman denies the report from Canton that General Chiang Kai-shek has given the intransigeant Kwangsi warlords a time limit in which to accept the appointments given" them by Nanking.

The Government made generous and libera! proposals, but these have not yet been accepted. Generals Li Tsung-jen and Pei Chung-hs have made counter-proposals which they were backing up with feverish war preparations. General Chiang Kai-shek, however, has not abandoned hope of a peaceful set- ilement.

The spokesman also denied the report that General Chiang Kai- ahek intended to relinquish the presidency of the Exceutive Yuan of military because of pressure duties.TM-
