COAL IN SHIPPING

The place of coal in shipping has fallen as the result of several developments, some of which are even more important than the ad- vance of the marine internal com- bustion engine. In spite of the phenomenal progress

the of marine Diesel ony 18.89 per cent. of the world's merchant tonnage is driven by all engines, but i addition to that 30.38 per cent of the existing tonnage uses oil-fired bollers, so that the tonnage de pending entirely on coal is now less than 50 per cent of the total mercantile marine of the world, compared with nearly 89 per cent in 1914 Since that date the world's steam tonnage using coal has decreased by nearly 12,000,000 tons. GLASS EYE SECRET DISCOVERED

BAN OVERCOME

London, July 22. When Germany in 1933 prohi- bited the export of raw materials, the special glass from which glass eyes are made was included in the ban. Now, when supplies for, this purpose were falling very low, British scientists have produced a glass as good, if not better, than that made by the Germans' secret process.
