THE NEW.TUNICS

Throughout the recent spell of

hot weather suits still continued populas. Cool materials for these are alik crepes, taffetas and satin. or two contrasting materials, as when a linen or pique jacket 15. shown with a woollen skirt, The favourite shape for the jacket is of short hip-length closely atted to the waistline, usually single-breast- ed with long revers, fastening with a link button. Some have slightly. flared peplums about three" inches below the rather low waistline. The sleeves are plain, with slight full- ness or squareness on the shoul- ders. Another variation has small gores in the centre back of the peplum, and yet another is in the form of a long, loose-fiting bo lero. Short loose swagger coats have extra back fullness, and are nearly always in a colour and ma- terial, which contrast with the dress itself.

TUNICS

Suits with long jackets are re- placed by tunics, which are ge- nerally in a printed material over. plain dark skirts. This style can be adapted to suit all Ogures. A tunte in lame or satin is suitable with a short for afternoon wear skirt and with a skirt of formal Instep length makes an attractive dinner dress. Alternative tunic Jackets may go with a plain black dress; one in simple style and ma- terial is for street wear, the same style in a richer fabric is for oc- casions such as lunch or cocktail parties. A detachable apron tunic of crepe may completely change the appearance of a dress. It may be plain or pleated, worn at the front or back of the skirt, or as a cape round the shoulders.

Over a dress of black romaine is worn a tunic coat of the same material with white pique, revers and fecings, the dress being finish-" ed at the neck with a large white pique bow. A black silk crepe skirt has a flared fünle with short puff aleeves made of a gay floral taffetas with a black background. Black and white printed pique in a large design males an attractive coat tunic over a black skirt, the belt and Ascot scarf being of emerald green. A simple tailored style shows the tunic at the front and sides only, the back of the dress being in one plece from waist to hem, an unbroken line particular- ly becoming to an older woman,

THE COATEE OR CAPE BY NIGHT?

What Well Dressed Women Are Now Wearing

London. July 11.

A fashion battle is raging be- tween.

the contre and cape. Which will win? It is interesting to watch as well as to take part In this contest of modes. There are active advocates on both sides and, looking round at any smart gathering in the evening. I am bound to admit that the odds are about even. writes cent

In the past few years first one and then the other hus had a run. with the coatee lasting for a year two., followed by the cape, which completely ousted its fore- runner

Cr

To-day, however, the coatee though with a difference-is being as much worn as the cape. The tealner cape, purticularly when it is composed of ostrich feathers, is still going strong. The fea- ther ones have the advantage < providing real warmth, for nothing is cosler than them astrich wraps.

The diaphanous cape is, on this account, the more quitable type. for summer evenings. The Du- chess of Marlborough, who is still wearing mourning, has one which reaches nearly to the waist, is made of the same material as its accompanying frock, black tulle with an embroidered design in black alk. She was wearing her coe thrown well back when dancing. 'so that it only covered the back of her gown, the shoulders being Left baze.

A cape of a completely different Ignd again is being worn by Mrs. Audrey Marshall Field, This is of organdie, white, with an all-over rather blurred pattern in dark

blues of the iris. This material, which has a certain amount of stiffness, gives the cape more "set"

its linea This cape has full- less gathered on 10 a yoke, and could not be worn in the négligé style adopted" by the Duchess "of Marlborough. Mrs. Field kept hers. round her shoulders.

3 very short cape of net com- pletely covered by bead embrol- deries in a pinky gold 18 being worn by Mrs. Kinnel. This reaches barely more than elbow length, and is useful for theatre or opera.

TAILORED NOW

The coatee a few years ago was a straight hanging wrap, mostly of velvet in some bright hue. To-day it is a tailored thing, often with a basque, or, if without this ad-" dition, it is decidely waisted and close fitting. Another difference from its earlier form is that the coat is generally of the same mate- rial as, or at any rate matches. the dress with which it is worn. Lady Illingworth, for example, has a frock of ice blue satin and with this she wears a hip-length waist- ed coatee of the same material It has revers and tailored coat. sleeves. Mrs. Leopold Lonsdale has her coat with rather more of a basque effect, one in turquoise The blue matching, her dress. Hon. Mrs Evelyn Fitzgerald, on the other hand, at the opera the other night wore a contee of cerise velvet which hung straight to the hips and had wide sleeves. falling. below the elbow Lady Nanburn- holme, too has a cerise coatee. tut of a semi-transparent mate- rial. close fitting and distinctly basqued
