CEUTA SHELLED BY CRUISER

British Naval Precautions At Gibraltar

London, July 21.

Although the Spanish Government eläimed in a broadcast from Madrid last night that the revolt had been completely, quel- led, conflicting reports" this morning, indicate that heavy fighting continues in many places and the situation is at least obscure.

It would appear there was a battle in and around Madrid yesterday when the rebels were repulsed, and severe struggles are reported from Cadiz, Saragossa. Cordoba and Seville, where a cruiser is also said to have shelled Ceuta, which is in rebels hands and which replied strongly.

There are a number of British residents and visitors in Spain and the Navy are taking measures to assure their safety.

There are several destroyers cen-, tred in Gibraltar, H.M.S. Sham- rock is at Malaga and the Keppell and Whitshed at Vigo, H.M.S. Whitehall is Bo Tangier. Many British visitors to Malaga are re- ported to have been taken off.

The battleship Repulse at present in Alexandria is to proceed. to Gibraltar when it has embarked at battalion of Gordon Highlanders.

Other measures have also been. concerted to aid stranded British nationals...
