Gossip Of The Week

London, June 15. Although all Ambassadors and Ministers accredited to the Court

of St. James's were invited to the Abyssinian Legation to meet the Emperor on Saturday, only some of the "Asiatic atil South American Ministers attended.

This was due to two reasons. The first was a doubt existing in the Diplomatic Corps whether Dr Martin is still officially accredited to the Court of St. James's,

The second was the fact that » point had been made of aanpune. ing that Signor Grandi, the Italian Ambassador, would not be invited.

The corporate spirit of the Dip- lomatic Corps is very strong. The Ambassadors curld not attend with out here slighting their fellow Ambassador.

I understand that diplomats who consulted the Foreign Office as to whether they could with propriety be present were informed that they must make their own individual decisions, and that no official guidance would be forthcoming

NEW FRENCH MONTAGU NORMAN

M. Auriol Laberie, the new Governor of the Bank of France, was M. Caillaux's Chef de Cabinst -principal private secretary is a rough English equivalent-when he was Minister of Finance,

This may be the reason for the selection of M. Labeyrie, the api- pointinent always being binde from the permanent officials of the Finance Ministry.

..LENT £7,000

By the statutes of the Bunk, which date from 1806, the Gover nor is appointed by the State.

Before assuming his duties, how- ever, the Government must own 100 shares. These to-day are worth about £7,500.

As French Treasury officials are not expected to be able to lay their hands on this amount of money, the Bank gives them credit.

The Governor therefore starts by giving hostages to the 12 Regents, as the directors of the Bank are called,

Presumably M. Blum means to take steps by which M. Laberrie will not be liable to any form of

pressure.

DINNER BOOM

i

Over 350 Conservative peers and M.P.8 will be present at the 1800 Club dinner next Wednesday, when the principal guest will be the Chancellor of the Exchequer,

This number creates a new high record for the function. The pre vious best had been the 313 who came to speed Mr. Baldwin on the eve of his departure with the Ot- tawa Conference delegation.

Mr. Neville Chamberlain's draw ing powers are undoubtedly re sponsible for the bulk of this year's dinners. On the other hand, the toast of "The Club" may have something to do with it,

!

He was unable to be present at the afternoon's ceremonica, as he had to return hurriedly to Paris to take up the portfolio assigned to him 24 hours earlier..

He made, however, a special visit in the morning to what Lord Swin- ton later said he hoped would prove a rallying-point for a for- invasion of tourists from eign Paris

M. Cot has had considerable ex. perience of his post, which he has held three times before.

WALL STREET SLUMPING AGAIN

A Wall Street broker whom I met during the week-end was any thing but cheery. He had just res ceived news that his firm on Satur day had truded in & here 80 shares

This was the worst half-day's' business in ite history. He told me that to break even" his firms in a full day had to do at least 9,000 shares. On Friday the total was 1,500.

A sign of the present stamp, my friend said, was the drop in the price of Stock Exchange seats. In a few months these bave fallen. from £35,000 to less than £20,000.

The chief cause of the present lack of business is believed to be the restrictive margin

require- menta enforced by the Security Commission. These have had the effect of forcing some larger trad- era to do their business through London's American market.

A curious paradox in the situa tion is that business appears to be booming and the reports of the large industrial companies are all highly favourable.

SIX-GUINEA TICKETS TILL 1947 With Wimbledon approaching I have heard many inquiries about centre-court seats available for de benture holders. Originally, when the new Wimbledon was financed sixteen years ago, there were two classes of debentures both issued at

£50 each.

The As were all redeemed in 1927, but still carry the right to the allotment of seat at the cur- rent price (now six guineas) every year up to 1047..

The B debentures, of which there were 1,500, carry no interest, but entitle the holders to a free seat up to 1917. A certain number" are drawn for redemption each year in July, at par-but the rights za

to seats continue.
